God Is For Real

And He Longs to Answer Your Most Difficult Questions

By Todd Burpo and David Drury

  • Paperback
  • £13.99

GOD IS FOR REAL, a new book from author of the best-seller HEAVEN IS FOR REAL, addresses soul-searching questions about God.

GOD IS FOR REAL addresses the questions: What is God like? Why are things the way they are in spite of who God is?

If Todd's first book, Heaven Is for Real, was about the then and there of heaven, GOD IS FOR REAL is about the here and now on earth:

Why are there are so many hypocritical church people? Why do Christians make such a big deal about the cross? Why doesn't God seem to answer our biggest prayers?

People are tired of pat answers offered up in churchy language explaining away their questions; we want the down-and-dirty truth. What bothers us about life and faith is real and gritty. We need a plain-spoken voice to offer God's answers to difficult struggles and painful doubts.

Todd charges into these subjects with a fireman's courage, a small-town friend's vulnerability, and a local pastor's compassion. He helps articulate the questions people have, then gives them relevant biblical wisdom for taking their next steps in faith.

God is ready to meet you! Are you ready to meet Him?

Okayest Mom

Natalie Gwyn
Authors:
Natalie Gwyn

NATALIE GWYN uses humor to brilliantly capture how God led and helped this mother of two to adopt four children from Ethiopia and successfully bond her blended family. The wife of a technology entrepreneur, already birth mother of two healthy young children-a boy and a girl-was living comfortably in the suburbs. Then she doubled the size of her family by adopting four Ethiopian children. Why?Her answer: "God."Popular blogger NATALIE GWYN has been cited widely for her candid, insightful, often humorous writing on cross-cultural adoptive Christian families (which number more than 4 million). HuffPo has linked to her controversial posts and celebrities like Kathie Lee Gifford have quoted and pictured her on social media. Here Natalie tells her whole mom story, including the only-God-could-do-this backstory. Her lighthearted narrative begins with the nudge of God toward the uncomfortable. She and her husband are almost certain they have misunderstood what the Almighty is asking of them, and with self-deprecating humor Natalie allows readers a glimpse into the process by which this already imperfect mom agreed to transnational, transracial adoption of more children than she already has.Natalie then takes the reader on her family's adventure to Ethiopia to legally adopt the three siblings God has chosen to add to their family. With the skill of a detective novelist, she reveals their discovery of a fourth sibling, their critical decision not to leave this child behind, and their harrowing quest to find, woo and legally adopt her, too.Similar to the laugh-out-loud humor of books on blended step-families, Natalie shares the bedroom, bathroom and kitchen scenes of this adoptive family's huge adjustments. She brilliantly captures each child's and each parent's perspective and, in doing so, reveals God in their midst.

The Big Deal of Taking Small Steps to Move Closer to God

Vashti Murphy McKenzie
Authors:
Vashti Murphy McKenzie

THE BIG DEAL... shows how to develop a stronger relationship with God and more effective spiritual lifestyle by taking small steps that lead to big changes.Bishop McKenzie prescribes very small changes-such as adding a mere thirty seconds of prayer daily-that lead to radical closeness to God. In a rapidly changing culture of uncertainty, there is a way to build a more meaningful relationship with the Almighty that's enjoyable. It doesn't mean striving for perfection. Instead, it's taking small yet meaningful steps to increase intimacy with God. The result of these small changes is greater ability to address life's challenges and greater availability to serve family, church, and community. Increasing spirituality is incremental, not monumental. Mustard-seed-like increases in positive actions (and corresponding decreases in negative ones) yield mountain-moving growth!

Love Is an Inside Job

Romal Tune
Authors:
Romal Tune

Public relations expert and business consultant, ROMAL TUNE, provides insights on how authenticity with God will help you heal your past, love yourself, and equip you to emerge more powerful than ever.Tune is the son of a drug-addicted single parent mother, who herself, inherited deeply ingrained obstacles to self-love. He found his way out of poverty via the military. He graduated from Howard University and Duke School of Divinity. He was a minister, a sought-after speaker, and social entrepreneur. Outwardly, he was successful, an overcomer.Yet, his past, hidden childhood trauma would sometimes revolt, causing self-sabotage that threatened to destroy the life he was creating. He worked hard to keep the emotional brokenness caused by the challenges of his upbringing carefully hidden -especially from the church. His mother, with whom he successfully reconciled after she was finally free from addiction, died of lung cancer. Then he divorced--a second time.Feeling like a failure, questioning his faith and will to live, he made a choice to not to give up but to examine his life and seek counseling.Dubbed "Brother Brown" (a Black man's Brene Brown), his book shares his process of applying therapy and faith to anger, shame, self-doubt and plaguing memories.Romal learned that the pursuit of success was not the key to healing the inner turmoil but it was in learning to accept the love of God and learning to love the wounded child within. His past pain was redeemed as self-worth and he finally found inner peace. No longer carrying the weight of secrets, guilt and shame, he emerged emotionally free and more powerful than ever. His book will empower others to stop living a past driven present by healing their stories, embracing the love of God, and learning to truly love themselves.

Unbound

Jamie Sumner
Authors:
Jamie Sumner

In UNBOUND, JAMIE SUMNER helps women who are struggling with the pressures of motherhood find comfort, hope and companionship by detailing her own difficult journey and highlighting women of the Bible who triumphed in the face of seemingly insurmountable odds.Women, especially Christian women, do not talk enough about the reality of motherhood: the enormous struggles it takes to get there, the loneliness of it, the unspoken or unmet expectations. We are often too afraid, ashamed, or unwilling to share our stories of disillusionment or pain. We quietly absorb the posts of sonograms and happily messy houses on Facebook as we inwardly wonder what's the matter with us. We listen to friends coo about their child's latest success as we watch our own terrorize their sibling or scream for an hour. We struggle to raise kids with special needs, physical disabilities, and social challenges, caught by surprise that this is what motherhood looks like. With honesty and vulnerability, JAMIE SUMNER walks readers through each chapter of her own journey to motherhood through infertility and special needs parenting and pairs it with that of a woman in the Bible so that readers can find comfort, hope, companionship and honesty rooted in biblical truths. The book is broken into four parts: The Wanting, The Waiting, The Getting and The Appreciating. UNBOUND will share the heartbreak of infertility and offer encouragement from someone who has had to wait for the fulfillment of motherhood; detail the specifics of infertility treatments, miscarriage, and raising special needs children through a Christian lens; honestly discuss the expectations versus the reality of being a mother; and highlight specific biblical women in each chapter who did not fit the expectations of their times through verses, scriptural anecdotes and guiding questions.UNBOUND shows you through Scripture how to be thankful for each step wherever it leads. Happiness is found as we release into His hands our own well-laid plans for His better, and more beautiful one, no matter how different it may look from what we first imagined.

No Other Gods

Ana Levy-Lyons
Authors:
Ana Levy-Lyons

An insightful and fresh perspective of the Ten Commandments reveals how this ancient text is the underpinning for social justice, equality, and the foundation of society. Each commandment is expanded beyond interpersonal morality to encompass the global economy and our hyper-connected age. Stealing, for example, is recast as the difference between the fair trade price of a commodity and what we pay. Keeping the Sabbath is recast as resistance to consumer culture, having enough. The Ten Commandments are a resource for everyone, from the spiritual-but-not-religious to the deeply observant, who wants to resist injustice, heal our earth, and find personal dignity amid the free-for-alls of modern life. We don't have to invent a bunch of new practices to meaningfully integrate our spirituality and politics. There is already a perfectly good set of ten of them, with as much progressive firepower as any of us can handle, that has existed for some 3000 years.Introduction: The Ten Commandments Are Practices of LiberationThe First Commandment: You Shall Have No Other Gods Besides MeDethrone the Modern Deities of Political, Social, and Corporate PowerThe Second Commandment: Do Not Make for Yourself a Sculpted Image; Do Not Bow to Them, Do Not Serve ThemAccept No Substitutes for God's Power of LiberationThe Third Commandment: Do Not Take the Name of God in VainDefend the Goodness of God; Take Responsibility for Resistance and ChangeThe Fourth Commandment: Observe the Sabbath Day and Keep it HolySquander One Day Every WeekThe Fifth Commandment: Honor Your Father and Your MotherStay Accountable to Where You Came FromThe Sixth Commandment: Do Not KillRenounce Human and Ecological ViolenceThe Seventh Commandment: Do Not Commit AdulteryStay In for the Long Run, Reject Throw-Away CultureThe Eighth Commandment: Do Not StealPay What Stuff Really Costs in Fair Wages and the Planet's ResourcesThe Ninth Commandment: Do Not Testify Against Your Neighbor As a Lying WitnessSpeak and Demand Truth in Every Sphere - Home, Corporations, GovernmentThe Tenth Commandment: Do Not CovetPractice Your Liberation--You Have Enough, You Are Enough
