Anna Jackson, Publisher

I joined Orbit in 2008 and became Publisher of Orbit UK in 2020. I oversee the entire list and am involved in all aspects of Orbit’s publishing, including acquisitions. I also oversee Orbit’s new Run For It list, which is dedicated to publishing the most exciting new voices in horror. I also continue to personally edit a select number of authors and commission a small number of titles each year. I’m keen to hear about books across the wide spectrum of SFF and horror, from a diverse range of voices. In addition to seeking out titles which will appeal to the core SFF and horror readerships, we’re also looking for books which can cross over from a genre audience to a mainstream general fiction audience. Here at Orbit, we’re proud to be constantly pushing the boundaries of what defines ‘genre’ fiction. My own editorships include James S. A. Corey, Daniel Abraham, Brent Weeks, Robert Jordan, Iain M. Banks, Trudi Canavan, M. R. Carey, Claire North, Patricia Briggs, Kevin Hearne, Jonathan French, Jackson Ford and Daisy Pearce.

Jenni Hill, Editorial Director

After beginning my career in indie publishing, I started at Orbit in 2011. It has been an amazing period working with everyone, from keenly talented debut authors to established names and bestsellers, not to mention my excellent colleagues on the LBBG, Orbit UK and Orbit US teams. My current editorships include Ann Leckie, Alex White, A. M. Kvita, Amy Leow, Annalee Newitz, Aparna Verma, Ash Huang, Benedict Jacka, Bitter Karella, C. L. Clark, C. A. Fletcher, Charles Stross, Eliza Chan, Everina Maxwell, Fonda Lee, Gail Simone, Jessie Sylva, Jim Butcher, M. A. Carrick, N. K. Jemisin, Sarah Hashem, Sarah K. L. Wilson, Sarah Rees Brennan, Shiloh Briar, Tade Thompson, Tasha Suri and Thomas D. Lee. I love boundary-breaking SFF and have edited many past Hugo Award-winners. I am also working with brands such as Red Sonja and League of Legends. I often look outside the box for my commissioning, from self-published successes to podcast or video game creators. My hobbies cover a wide range of nerdy interests including video games, fanfiction, sword-fighting, manga/comics, ttRPGS and LARP; I like to keep an eye on emerging trends in geek culture and let this inform my commissioning decisions.

James Long, Senior Commissioning Editor

I joined Orbit in 2010 and since then have acquired and published books across the spectrum of science fiction, fantasy and horror. Epic fantasy is my specialty and I have worked with some of the biggest authors in this space, including John Gwynne and James Islington, and many of the titles I’ve published have become Sunday Times and New York Times bestsellers. Fiction that wins me over will always have most of these elements: a strong narrative voice and hook, engaging characters, inventive and authentic worldbuilding, a sharp sense of humour and smart plotting. Non-Orbit books I’ve enjoyed in recent years include Jay Kristoff’s Empire of the Vampire series, The Blacktongue Thief by Christopher Beuhlman and The Buffalo Hunter Hunter by Stephen Graham Jones. My editorships include John Gwynne, A. S. Tamaki, Richard Swan, Andrea Stewart, Anthony Ryan, Annabel Campbell, Kim Stanley Robinson and Sung-il Kim.

Emily Byron, Senior Commissioning Editor

I have been acquiring for Orbit since I joined the team as Assistant Editor in 2016. My tastes are varied and I’m willing to consider anything speculative, from action-packed epic fantasy to dynamic space opera and everything in between. I’m particularly drawn to character-driven narratives with immersive storytelling and a strong voice. I’m also a sucker for beautiful writing, witty dialogue, inventive world-building and clever plot twists. Non-Orbit books I have loved recently include The Tainted Cup by Robert Jackson Bennet, The Raven Scholar by Antonia Hodgson, Blood Over Bright Haven by M. L. Wang, Empire of the Vampire by Jay Kristoff, Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir and The Poet Empress by Shen Tao. My editorships include Emily Tesh, Hannah Whitten, P. Djèlí Clark, Evan Winter, Melissa Caruso, Maiga Doocy, Molly O’ Neill, Nicholas Eames, Gareth Hanrahan, Bethany Jacobs, Chelsea Abdullah and M. H. Ayinde.

Serena Savini, Editor

I joined Orbit in 2023 and I’m very excited to now be acquiring my own titles. I’ve loved SFF since I was a little kid growing up in Italy, carrying my falling-apart books everywhere. I love anything that feels epic in scope and has those classic tropes and archetypes (dragons, wizards, orcs, quests) but comes at it from a fresh and diverse perspective. I grew up in the age of paranormal romance, and I’m invested in the comeback of werewolves and vampires. I also come from a fandom background, so I’ll be interested in anything from former and current fanfic writers, especially queer and trans voices. I’m really keen to add sci-fi and space opera to my list, especially anything that feels like Star Trek, Ann Leckie, Becky Chambers or Martha Wells. My editorships include Heather Fawcett, Ken MacLeod, Tom Holt and K. J. Parker, and I’ve also recently acquired Seam Ripper by Anna Fiteni - a sharp, gothic vampire fantasy set in an Italian fashion house in 1898 London.
