The Feminist Book Society Manifesto: Feminist. Bookish. Curious. Inclusive. Challenging. Kind. This month's Feminist Book Society is part of The Summer of Testaments season at Gower St, throughout which we are celebrating Margaret Atwood's forthcoming novel. We are living in tumultuous times, and it's easy to feel helpless in the face of inequity. But co-founders Katy Loftus and Eleanor Dryden will bring together three phenomenal women who have used their work and writing to prove that we can challenge inequity and change the world: Zahra Hankir is a Lebanese-British journalist who writes about the intersection of politics, culture, and society in the Middle East. She is the editor of first-of-its-kind essay collection Our Women on the Ground: Essays by Arab Women Reporting from the Arab World (Penguin Random House), in which nineteen sahafiyat-female journalists- tell us, in their own words, about what it's like to report on conflicts that (quite literally) hit close to home. Gina Martin is an activist and author of Be The Change: A Toolkit for the Activist in You, an essential handbook for the modern activist. She led the successful national campaign to make upskirting illegal, which led to the Voyeurism Act being passed in April 2019. Bethany Rutter is a writer, editor, fashion blogger, co-host of What Page? Podcast, and a fierce UK voice in the debate around body positivity, editor of street-style photography book PLUS+. She is author of No Big Deal, her warm, funny, inspiring debut YA novel, which tells the story of Emily who faces a constant battle to stay strong and be her true self. Tickets are £10 / £8 students and Plus cardholders, and include a drink This event is part of The Summer of Testaments, Waterstones Gower Street's season celebrating Margaret Atwood's forthcoming novel The Testaments. We'll tackle themes such as social justice, masculinity, reproductive rights and activism, host an exhibition of The Handmaid's Tale graphic novel, and discuss Atwood's earlier novels in our book clubs.
