'The perfect stocking filler for fans of our four-legged friends and great British pubs alike' - Richard Attwood

'Bought one copy for myself and now I have come back another three times to buy it as presents for other people.' - Chris Moon

'A perfect Christmas present!'

'Glorious photos and some very funny commentary'

'What an awesome collection of pub dogs'

'Beautiful pictures of a range of public house pooches the length and breadth of Britain' - Carl Morris

'A beautifully crafted book giving a perfect insight into British culture' - Jill Monum

'Great book, well thought out and beautifully produced'

This beautifully photographed collection tells the stories of the much-loved dogs, of all kinds, that live in pubs all over Great Britain, not least the Pub Dog Capital of Britain, Whitstable.

Locals love their pub dogs and landlords often say that people come in as much for the dog as for anything else. Dogs make a pub feel like home for regulars.

Fleckney and Lucas chronicle the incredible variety of dogs that actually live in, rather than simply visit, Britain's pubs. They showcase the dogs with their beautiful photographic portraits and tell their stories, too. In feel, this is very much a 'family album' of British pub dogs.

Biographical Notes

Paul Fleckney (Author)
PAUL FLECKNEY is a journalist. He is an avid pub-goer and a life-long dog lover who's never owned a dog, and therefore gets a shameless vicarious pleasure from the Pub Dogs project.

Abbie Lucas (Author)
ABBIE LUCAS is a London-based film-maker and photographer. Her involvement with pubs began earlier than most, having grown up in two that were owned and operated by her parents on the South Island of New Zealand. She loves dogs too, even when they insist on lying on her while she tries to snap their portrait.

The Older Person's Guide to New Stuff

Mark Leigh
Authors:
Mark Leigh

A handy guide for anyone who says, 'The Facebook' or 'The Google' or who asks, 'Do they deliver emails on Sunday?' This is a book for the elderly and not-so-elderly who are bamboozled not just by the technology of the contemporary world, but also various modern concepts and conceits that the more youthful take for granted. It explains a host of modern concepts and technologies that have entered everyday use and parlance but which are alien (and possibly frightening) not just to the elderly - but probably also to anyone over 45. These concepts are universal and should therefore appeal to readers in the UK, Australia, US and Europe. The definitions are all real, but entertaining, making use of easy-to-understand 'real world' references or examples to explain them.

The Amazing Test Match Crime

Adrian Alington
Authors:
Adrian Alington

All England waited with passionate eagerness for the final match to be played at the Oval. For this was to be played to a finish and would decide the fate of the Ashes. It is 1938 and England is brimming with excitement as the final Test Match against Imperia draws near. But no corner of the land has the fate of the Ashes closer to its heart than the village of Wattlecombe Ducis, Glebeshire. It was here at the Manor House that Norman Blood, captain of England, spent his childhood playing cricket with the vicar's radiant daughter, Monica. And it was she who presented young but poor Joe Prestwick with a belt on the occasion of his first game of cricket, saving his honour for as Sir Timothy Blood remarked, 'I would rather see the whole village dead at my feet than a man bowling in braces.'With a short - but sensational - career behind him, Joe just needs to be selected to play at the Oval to win Monica's heart and her hand in marriage: everything depends on the Test. But The Bad Men, Europe's most wanted gang, have no intention of letting the best team win. Sawn-off Carlo, The Professor and Ralph the Disappointment (an Englishman who, knowing the rules of the Game, is eternally damned for not playing by them) plan to strike a blow at the very heart of proud Albion and her Empire. The Amazing Test Match Crime, first published in 1939, is a wicked yet affectionate comedy of cricketing (and criminal) manners, proving - as if proof were needed - that a straight bat and nimble spinning finger will always win through.

WINNER OF THE 2018 NATIONAL BOOK AWARD NEW YORK TIMES NOTABLE BOOK OF 2018A moving story of love, friendship, grief, healing, and the magical bond between a woman and her dog. When a woman unexpectedly loses her lifelong best friend and mentor, she finds herself burdened with the unwanted dog he has left behind. Her own battle against grief is intensified by the mute suffering of the dog, a huge Great Dane traumatised by the inexplicable disappearance of its master, and by the threat of eviction: dogs are prohibited in her apartment building. While others worry that grief has made her a victim of magical thinking, the woman refuses to be separated from the dog except for brief periods of time. But while troubles abound, rich and surprising rewards lie in store for both of them.Elegiac and searching, The Friend is both a meditation on loss and a celebration of human-canine devotion."A beautiful book ... a world of insight into death, grief, art, and love." -Wall Street Journal"A penetrating, moving meditation on loss, comfort, memory...Nunez has a wry, withering wit." -NPR"Dry, allusive and charming...the comedy here writes itself." Abbi Jacobson
Authors:
Abbi Jacobson

***A NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER***From the co-creator and co-star of the hit series Broad City, a hilarious and poignant collection about love, loss, work, comedy and figuring out who you really are when you thought you already knew. When Abbi Jacobson announced to friends and acquaintances that she planned to drive across the country alone, she was met with lots of questions and opinions: Why wasn't she going with friends? Wouldn't it be incredibly lonely? The North route is better! Was it safe for a woman? The Southern route is the way to go! You should bring mace! And a common one . . . why? But Abbi had always found comfort in solitude, and needed space to step back and hit the reset button. As she spent time in each city and town on her way to Los Angeles, she mulled over the big questions - What do I really want? What is the worst possible scenario in which I could run into my ex? How has the decision to wear my shirts tucked in been pivotal in my adulthood? In this collection of anecdotes, observations and reflections - all told in the sharp, wildly funny and relatable voice that has endeared Abbi to critics and fans alike - readers will feel like they're in the passenger seat on a fun and, ultimately, inspiring journey. With some original illustrations by the author.

Out of the Clouds

Linda Carroll, David Rosner
Authors:
Linda Carroll, David Rosner

In the bestselling tradition of the The Eighty-Dollar Champion, the propulsive, inspiring Cindarella story of Stymie, an unwanted Thoroughbred, and Hirsch Jacobs, the once dirt-poor trainer who bought the colt on the cheap and molded him into the most popular horse of his time and the richest racehorse the world had ever seen. In the wake of World War II, as turmoil and chaos were giving way to a spirit of optimism, Americans were looking for inspiration and role models showing that it was possible to start from the bottom and work your way up to the top-and they found it in Stymie, the failed racehorse plucked from the discard heap by trainer Hirsch Jacobs. Like Stymie, Jacobs was a commoner in "The Sport of Kings," a dirt-poor Brooklyn city slicker who forged an unlikely career as racing's winningest trainer by buying cheap, unsound nags and magically transforming them into winners. The $1,500 pittance Jacobs paid to claim Stymie became history's biggest bargain as the ultimate iron horse went on to run a whopping 131 races and win 25 stakes, becoming the first Thoroughbred ever to earn more than $900,000. The Cinderella champion nicknamed "The People's Horse" captivated the masses with his rousing charge-from-behind stretch runs, his gritty blue-collar work ethic, and his rags-to-riches success story. In a golden age when horse racing rivaled baseball and boxing as America's most popular pastime, he was every bit as inspiring a sports hero as Joe DiMaggio and Joe Louis. Taking readers on a crowd-pleasing ride with Stymie and Jacobs, The People's Horse unwinds a real-life Horatio Alger tale of a dauntless team and its working-class fans who lived vicariously through the stouthearted little colt they embraced as their own.

Coal Black Mornings

Brett Anderson
Authors:
Brett Anderson

Brett Anderson came from a world impossibly distant from rock star success, and in Coal Black Mornings he traces the journey that took him from a childhood as 'a snotty, sniffy, slightly maudlin sort of boy raised on Salad Cream and milky tea and cheap meat' to becoming founder and lead singer of Suede.Anderson grew up in Hayward's Heath on the grubby fringes of the Home Counties. As a teenager he clashed with his eccentric taxi-driving father (who would parade around their council house dressed as Lawrence of Arabia, air-conducting his favourite composers) and adored his beautiful, artistic mother. He brilliantly evokes the seventies, the suffocating discomfort of a very English kind of poverty and the burning need for escape that it breeds. Anderson charts the shabby romance of creativity as he travelled the tube in search of inspiration, fuelled by Marmite and nicotine, and Suede's rise from rehearsals in bedrooms, squats and pubs. And he catalogues the intense relationships that make and break bands as well as the devastating loss of his mother.Coal Black Mornings is profoundly moving, funny and intense - a book which stands alongside the most emotionally truthful of personal stories.
