Knowing the Score

How Sport teaches us about Philosophy (and Philosophy about Sport)

By David Papineau

  • Paperback
  • £14.99

How philosophy can illuminate sport and what sport can tell us about philosophy...

'A tour de force that provides fresh insight not only into the nature of sport, but cooperation, the mind, altruism, teamwork, leadership, tribalism and ritualism. It's a book that every sports fan should read, and every sports writer should absorb' Matthew Syed

'David Papineau's book is an important contribution to our thinking about sports, society, psychology, and moral philosophy. But it is also much more than that. Gripping from start to finish, it is a terrific read full of humour and good sense. You don't even have to like sports to enjoy it' Ian Buruma

Why do sports competitors choke? How can Roger Federer select which shot to play in 400 milliseconds? Should foreign-born footballers be eligible to play for England? Why do opposing professional cyclists help each other? Why do American and European golfers hate each other? Why does test cricket run in families? Why is punching tolerated in rugby but not in soccer?

These may not look like philosophical questions, but David Papineau shows that under the surface they all raise long-standing philosophical issues. To get to the bottom of these and other sporting puzzles, we need help from metaphysics or ethics, or from the philosophy of mind or political philosophy, as well as numerous other philosophical disciplines.

Knowing the Score will be an entertaining, fact-filled and erudite book that ranges far and wide through the sporting world. As a prominent philosopher who is also an enthusiastic amateur sportsman and omnivorous sports fan, David Papineau is uniquely well-placed to show how philosophy can illuminate sporting issues. By bringing his philosophical expertise to bear, he will add a new dimension to the way we think about sport.

A Brief History of Atlantis

Stephen P. Kershaw
Authors:
Stephen P. Kershaw

The Atlantis story remains one of the most haunting and enigmatic tales from antiquity, and one that still resonates very deeply with the modern imagination. But where did Atlantis come from, what was it like, and where did it go to?Atlantis was first introduced by the Greek philosopher Plato in two dialogues the Timaios and Kritias, written in the fourth century BC. As he philosophises about the origins of life, the Universe and humanity, the great thinker puts forward a stunning description of Atlantis, an island paradise with an ideal society. But the Atlanteans degenerate and become imperialist aggressors: they fight against antediluvian Athens, which heroically repels their mighty forces, before a cataclysmic natural disaster destroys the warring states. His tale of a great empire that sank beneath the waves has sparked thousands of years of debate over whether Atlantis really existed. But did Plato mean his tale as history, or just as a parable to help illustrate his philosophy? The book is broken down into two main sections plus a coda - firstly the translations/commentaries which will have the discussions of the specifics of the actual texts; secondly a look at the reception of the myth from then to now; thirdly a brief round-off bringing it all together.

Wild Cycling

Chris Sidwells
Authors:
Chris Sidwells

This book is written for all those who love riding off-road. Cycling is a unique way to see and experience wild places and Wild Cycling is a hardworking guide book that takes the reader on a journey through the wild and stunning scenery of the British mainland, whilst providing inspiration and enough information for readers to get out and explore it for themselves. The concept of wild cycling means taking a bike on natural routes to explore wild places. The routes in the book link country lanes, green lanes, bridleways and towpaths to use natural and sometimes ancient ways between places to explore. Wild Cycling is a guide book with inspirational photographs, descriptive copy, annotated route maps and ride profiles and GPS details. An introductory 'how to' section discusses bikes, techniques and safety. The rides are then divided by region and each ride is given between two and six pages depending on length and complexity. The title in each case sums up the ride's spirit and location. A fact-file gives details of ride length, geographical location, highest point, total height gained and notable hills with individual gradients. Each fact-file gives an indication of how hard the ride is, and how wild. Each ride is linked to a person, a race, a challenge, a moment in history or simply a landscape, or anything that makes the ride a unique challenge for two wheels and leg power. The ride names echo those given to rock climbs. A section of each description will draw the reader's attention to points of interest: something, some person or an event that defines or is uniquely connected with each ride. Each route includes 'escape points', where a ride can be cut short in case the weather changes or because of an emergency. Some rides can be completed in half a day, whereas others may take several days with overnight stops.

Bonnie St. John, Allen P. Haines

'Micro-Resilience is a powerful book that will help you rethink the drive-until-you-drop approach to work. By re-framing your thinking, you can learn to learn bounce back from setbacks and create a life of power and meaning' Daniel Pink, author of Drive and To Sell is HumanAs leadership consultants and executive trainers, Bonnie St. John and Allen Haines have heard the same complaints from clients for years; periodic burnout, lack of focus and low energy. So they dug into the latest research on neuroscience, psychology and physiology looking for big answers. Instead they found small answers; proof that small adjustments in daily routines, including thought patterns, food and drink, rest and movement can fight the forces that sap our energy and store focus and drive. They call these amazing efficient restorative techniques 'micro-resilience.'Thousands of men and women from all walks of life have already found effortless ways to incorporate these little changes into the busiest of schedules. Dozens of entertaining anecdotes from real people using micro-resilience demonstrate that when our brains fire faster, our energy increases and we can cope with almost any surprise, pressure or crisis, no matter how big or small.

Jonathan Trott
Authors:
Jonathan Trott

Jonathan Trott was England's rock during one of the most successful periods in the team's history - he scored a century on debut to clinch the Ashes in 2009, and cemented his position as their pivotal batsman up to and beyond the team's ascendancy to the number 1 ranked test team in 2011. Yet shortly after reaching those heights, he started to crumble, and famously left the 2012-13 Ashes tour of Australia suffering from a stress related illness. His story is the story of Team England - it encompasses the life-cycle of a team that started out united by ambition, went on to achieve some of the greatest days in the team's history but then, bodies and minds broken, fell apart amid acrimony.Having seen all of this from the inside, Jonathan's autobiography takes readers to the heart of the England dressing room, and to the heart of what it is to be a professional sportsman. Not only does it provide a unique perspective on a remarkably successful period in English cricket and its subsequent reversal, it also offers a fascinating insight into the rewards and risks faced as a sportsman carrying the hope and expectation of a team and a nation. And it's a salutary tale of the dangers pressure can bring in any walk of life, and the perils of piling unrealistic expecations on yourself.
