HIGHLY COMMENDED for the British Medical Awards book prize for Popular Medicine

Are you feeling down and irritable a lot of the time? Do relationships with your family and friends seem more complicated than they used to? Do you wish that someone would understand that you aren't just being a moody teenager? If so, you're not alone and this book can help.

Depression is more than being sad or in a bad mood and it can make life feel like it is all too much. Depression tells you that there is nothing you can do about it, but with the right help you can turn your story around and rediscover all there is to enjoy in life.

This practical guide uses techniques based on Interpersonal Psychotherapy for Adolescents (IPT-A) which has been used to help children and young people with depression around the world. IPT-A helps you to develop your own story of what is happening in your life so that you can understand your depression and how to get out of it.

You will learn who you can call on to help, even when depression tries to tell you that no one is interested. Don't listen - depression gives bad advice! IPT-A helps you to sort out the problems with other people that are an inevitable part of life when you are growing up and so much is changing around you. With IPT-A, we will get there together.

The book's main strength has to be its appeal to a wide range of clinical and non-clinical readers. It is topical, clinically sound and empowering. It is engaging and therapeutic - a positive book which guides the reader to reflect on experiences and thought processes and enable them to seek change and shape the thinking process. It is a well-written therapeutic text which could have a positive impact on many. It could empower teachers, clinicians, parents and most importantly the teens themselves to problem solve and understand the depth of emotion and behaviours that shape their mental health. It is also a valuable tool for those who do not present to a GP or teacher but wish for support or help. This book challenges any reader to evaluate thinking patterns and reflect. This is an informative thought-provoking read which every reader will take something positive from. — BMA Medical Book Awards 2017 review - highly commended

Yet, through all of these punctures, one constant remained: Jools' love of cycling. In Back in the Frame Jools talks to the other female trailblazers who are disrupting the cycling narrative as well as telling the story of how she overcame her health problems, learned how to cycle her own path and even found a love of Lycra shorts along the way.

Writing to Awaken

Mark Matousek
Authors:
Mark Matousek

Writing to Awaken is an inspirational investigation of the self through expressive writing, guiding you along the path of awakening through radical truth-telling and self-inquiry. With targeted and revelatory questions, you'll be prompted to explore your own personal narrative-to write honestly about your deepest wounds, greatest challenges, hidden gifts, yearnings, and opportunities for growth-in order to discover a deeply authentic understanding of yourself and move toward a more liberated, truthful life.We each have our own story, a personal myth constructed from the content life presents us: we connect dots to shape the narrative, devise plotlines from circumstance, change characters, fashion conflicts, and adjust structure, settings, and themes as our lives unfold. But so often, over time, we come to believe that we are our story, identifying so strongly with the tales we've told ourselves and others that we cling to them for our very existence-even when they don't quite fit. The realization that there's a discrepancy between the narrative you've crafted and your authentic self can be disconcerting at first, but the exploration of that gap is a doorway to personal freedom, and this book will lead you through it.The writing exercises in this guide, one for nearly every week of the year, ask you to tell the whole truth about your experience. In doing so, you'll come to realize that once you engage in this radical truth-telling, expressing yourself with complete honesty, your story changes; and when your story changes, your life is transformed. Rather than sticking with your illusive and tricky "Story of Me," you'll be prompted to go even deeper, piercing your personal myth and illuminating aspects of psyche and spirit that give way to profound moments of understanding and personal healing. This is not a how-to book for writers; it's an invitation on a journey of self-discovery-a guide to facing yourself without flinching, accepting yourself as you are, surrendering to what is, and daring to question and transform what isn't true. With Writing to Awaken, you'll learn how to break free from the trance of mistaken identity and discover your essential, authentic self.

Test Your EQ

Mark Davis
Authors:
Mark Davis

Few topics in recent years have captured the imagination of psychologists and the general public like emotional intelligence (EQ) - the ability to recognize, understand, regulate and ultimately use emotions effectively. Just as traditional measures of intelligence (IQ) tap our ability to understand and use abstract information, measures of EQ capture our ability to understand and use emotions - both our own and those of other people. Measures of IQ are no longer enough: in many - if not most - situations, EQ may be just as important as (or more important than) IQ. Until now, most measures of EQ have not been readily available to the public. Here, at last, Professor Mark Davis presents EQ in a clear and accessible way, with 25 tests that have been specially developed for this book. Each measure taps a specific component of EQ in a particular way to enable you to determine your particular strengths and weaknesses. The book concludes with suggestions about the practical, concrete steps you can take to improve your own EQ.
