Unscaled

How A.I. and a New Generation of Upstarts are Creating the Economy of the Future

By Hemant Taneja

  • Paperback
  • £14.99

The most successful startups of the present and future are turning the old rule on its head - bigger is not always better.

'A thought-provoking look at the technology that is changing the world of business and the benefits, pitfalls, and challenges for society as a whole.' -- Kenneth I. Chenault, former chief executive officer, American Express Company

Throughout the twentieth century, technology and economics drove a dominant logic: bigger was almost always better. It was smart to scale up - to take advantage of classic economies of scale.

But in the unscaled economy, size and scale have become a liability. Today's most successful companies - Uber, Airbnb, Amazon, Salesforce - have defied the traditional 'economies of scale' approach by renting scale instead of spending vast amounts of money building it. And a new generation of upstarts is using artificial intelligence to automate tasks that once required expensive investment, enabling them to grow big without the bloat of giant organisations.

In Unscaled, Hemant Taneja convincingly shows how the unscaled economy is remaking massive, deeply-rooted industries and opening up fantastic possibilities for entrepreneurs, imaginative companies and resourceful individuals. Beyond that, it can be the model for solving some of the world's greatest problems, including climate change and soaring healthcare costs, potentially reversing many of the ills brought on by mass industrialization.

The unscale wave has only just started. To succeed in business today, companies, CEOs and leaders everywhere must unlearn what they have been taught - they must embrace an unscaled mindset.

Jeopardy is the single greatest catalyst for making things happen in life.In Jeopardy, award-winning entrepreneur Wilfred Emmanuel-Jones argues that our natural instinct for caution is one of the greatest barriers to making progress in life, and shows how embracing jeopardy is essential if you want to succeed.Drawing on a life that has taken him from a deprived childhood in inner-city Birmingham to becoming one of the nation's most famous farmers, he demonstrates how we can all go further in life by learning to escape the fears that stop us from achieving our ambitions.Wilfred Emmanuel-Jones is no stranger to jeopardy: he remortgaged his house in 2005 to launch his brand 'The Black Farmer' from nothing. Its products are now stocked in all major supermarkets and the business has an annual turnover of several million. In this book, he shows that only by embracing jeopardy, and liberating ourselves from the shackles of uncertainty and self-doubt, can we realise our full potential. What could you achieve, if you decided to stop letting fear hold you back?

'Ask A Manager is the book I wish I'd had in my desk drawer when I was starting out (or even, let's be honest, fifteen years in).' - Sarah Knight, New York Times bestselling author of The Life-Changing Magic of Not Giving a F*ck and Get Your Sh*t Together'I am a HUGE fan of Alison Green's "Ask a Manager" column. I never miss it and always want more. This book is even better.' - Robert Sutton, bestselling author of Good Boss, Bad Boss and The No Asshole RuleWhat do you say when your new job is very different from what you agreed to? How do you tell your boss that your workload is too heavy, or that you need more training? How do you deal with a colleague whose loud speaker phone calls are driving you insane? And how do you repair your reputation after getting drunk at the company holiday party? Ten years of writing a workplace advice column have taught Green that people tend to avoid difficult conversations in the office because we simply don't know what to say. But the stakes are just as high if we don't speak up, because problems that could be solved with a simple conversation can fester if they aren't addressed. In this witty and practical guide, Green tackles 200 of those delicate discussions that you need to have, but might not be sure how to begin - and arms you with the wording to do it. Along the way, she shares some of the most outlandish and hilarious letters she's received from readers over the years - from an employee who placed a black magic 'curse' on her coworkers to a boss who repeatedly stole an employee's lunch. You'll learn what to say when:*Your coworker keeps pushing her work on you*Your new job is very different than what you agreed to*Your boss seems unhappy with your work*You catch an employee in a lie*Colleagues keep making judgemental comments about your diet*Your coworker's loud speaker phone calls are making you homicidal . . . and plenty more difficult or awkward situations you might find yourself in!

George Anders, George Anders
Authors:
George Anders, George Anders

In a tech-dominated world, the most needed degrees are the most surprising: the liberal arts Did you take the right classes in college? Will your major help you get the right job offers? For more than a decade, the national spotlight has focused on science and engineering as the only reliable choice for finding a successful post-grad career. Our destinies have been reduced to a caricature: learn to write computer code or end up behind a counter, pouring coffee. Quietly, though, a different path to success has been taking shape. In YOU CAN DO ANYTHING, George Anders explains the remarkable power of a liberal arts education - and the ways it can open the door to thousands of cutting-edge jobs every week. The key insight: curiosity, creativity, and empathy aren't unruly traits that must be reined in. You can be yourself, as an English major, and thrive in sales. You can segue from anthropology into the booming new field of user research; from classics into management consulting, and from philosophy into high-stakes investing. You can bring a humanist's grace to our rapidly evolving high-tech future. And if you know how to attack the job market, your opportunities will be vast.In this book, you will learn why resume-writing is fading in importance and why "telling your story" is taking its place. You will learn how to create jobs that don't exist yet, and to translate your campus achievements into a new style of expression that will make employers' eyes light up. You will discover why people who start in eccentric first jobs - and then make their own luck - so often race ahead of peers whose post-college hunt focuses only on security and starting pay. You will be ready for anything.
