Miss D and Me

Life with the Invincible Bette Davis

By Kathryn Sermak and Danelle Morton

  • Hardback
  • £20.99

The untold story of the unique friendship between Hollywood icon Bette Davis and her young assistant and protégé, Kathryn Sermak, who became her best friend and loyal companion during the final decade of Davis' life.

The Hollywood icon Bette Davis remains an enigma - the public eye. Only one person truly knew both her indomitable strength and her private vulnerability - Kathryn Sermak, her personal assistant and protégé for the last decade of her life. When Kathryn started working for Miss D in 1979, the recent college graduate was a self-professed "rube" who had to be schooled my her new employer in everything from how to give a proper handshake to which fork to use for dinner by her exacting, sometimes imperious boss. But under Miss D's tutelage, Kathryn began to blossom, and a close friendship began to develop.

Over the next decade, Kathryn became much more to the aging Davis than just a loyal employee. The two women from such different backgrounds grew incredibly close, as Kathryn put her young life on hold, sacrificing love and opportunity to guard the image and legacy of the star. Kathryn was offered a front-row seat to Davis's life of Hollywood glamour (as Davis schmoozed with celebs and took her valedictory lap around the entertainment scene) and also the dark side of that world (when Davis's daughter wrote a tell-all that nearly killed her mother). Using one of their final road trips together in France during the summer of 1985 as a backdrop, this is the story of Kathryn and Miss D's unlikely friendship and a fascinating look at a larger-than-life diva who was determined to live her life on her own terms. "Someday you will write about us, Kath," Miss D told her young friend just before her death. In MISS D AND ME Kathryn fulfills the promise she made to her mentor to tell and celebrate their story.

Since Bette Davis' death, Kathryn has continued to preserve the memory of her friend and mentor--she has maintained meticulous archives of their time together that has never been shared before, including photographs, audio tape interviews between the two of them, and other sought after mementos. In 1997 she co-founded the Bette Davis Foundation with Miss Davis's son, Michael Merrill, and is a member of the Board of Trustees. Along with Mr. Merrill, Kathryn is also co-executor of the Bette Davis Estate.

Scott Ian
Authors:
Scott Ian

Scott Ian, rhythm guitarist and cofounder of Anthrax and author of I'm the Man, collects all of his craziest hard rock stories into one balls-to-the-wall volume. Access All Areas has tales of humor, excess, fun, debauchery, food, booze, and mayhem from Scott's many years on the road as well as his encounters with celebrities like Dimebag Darrell, Trent Reznor/NIN, Madonna, Lemmy Kilmister, John Carpenter, Robert Trujillo (Metallica), Slayer, David Lee Roth, and many more.In recent years, Scott Ian's "Speaking Words" club tours have drawn a devoted crowd of metal fans who love a good rock story. Ian has perfected his delivery, comic timing, and ability to highlight where the ridiculous meets the sublime. Best of all, Ian seems to lack the ability to be embarrassed, rendering Access All Areas howlingly funny, self-deprecating, and every bit as brash and brazen as one would expect from one of the original architects of speed metal.

Waylon

Terry Jennings, David Thomas
Authors:
Terry Jennings, David Thomas

In a signed copy of his autobiography, Waylon Jennings penned a personal note to his son, Terry Jennings, ending it with the words, "I did my best. Now it's your turn." It is with this spirit in mind that Terry has finished telling the true story of his father's remarkable, unvarnished life.Born when Waylon was a mere nineteen years old, Terry had an intimate view of his father's antics, as the two shared an incredibly close relationship. More like brothers than a father and son, by the time Terry was thirteen he was a regular on the road, smoking marijuana with his dad and observing the wild ways that laid the foundation of the infamous country-music sensation, "The Outlaws." When it came to "The Outlaws," Johnny Cash and Willie Nelson were active players in the debauchery, as Waylon led a reckless lifestyle centered around his music, hard drugs, and women. Critical acclaim, sold-out tours and mob-like pandemonium were unfortunately overshadowed by darker personal challenges he faced including multiple divorces, crippling debt, and severe depression stemming from his best friend Buddy Holly's premature death.Terry Jennings witnessed all of the above and was a willing participant. As he followed his father on the road he began working with the crew, managing Waylon's career and becoming his closest confidante. Despite their closenes, though, the rules of the road ultimately prevailed. Eventually Terry found himself nursing a drug habit that eclipsed his father's; more than once Waylon even stole Terry's girlfriends. While it is no secret that Waylon was no saint, this is an honest look at a loving and complicated father-son relationship that will resonate for generations of country music fans.

Lonely Boy

Ben Thompson, Steve Jones
Authors:
Ben Thompson, Steve Jones

Ask anyone who knows about music and they'll tell you: without Steve Jones, punk rock would not exist. This is not hyperbole. The prototypical street-urchin-turned-Sex-Pistols-guitarist was the inspiration for and creator of the punk movement, which started shaking the culture in late 1970s London and is just as strong today. Lonely Boy presents never-before-told stories of an abused boy who was neglected by his mother and stepfather and abandoned by his biological father. It chronicles the petty crime and anger of his youth, which fueled the musical onslaught to come, the meteoric rise of the Pistols, the role of impresario Malcolm McLaren, and how a band with one album defined a generation and changed history. Lonely Boy educates people on where it all started, straight from the guy who inspired the whole scene.

Things I Carry Around

Troy Cassar-Daley, Tom Gilling
Authors:
Troy Cassar-Daley, Tom Gilling

A born storyteller, Troy Cassar-Daley has at last turned his talent to sharing his own inspiring life.'Troy's achievements are many, and perhaps the finest may be his ability to make us listen to his heart.' Joy McKeanFor the first time, Troy talks about his early life - how his parent's divorce changed things for him, about missing his Dad and growing up in Grafton surrounded by the warmth and love of his mother, Irene, his Nan and Pop and his extended Indigenous family. A larrikin at heart, Troy includes all the highs and lows on his path to stardom: the thrill of performing on stage at the Tamworth Music Festival with Jimmy Little when he was just 15; the excitement of heading off on tour with Brian Young and then discovering just how lonely life on the road could be; his first record deal; playing with the greats - Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard and Slim Dusty; his first album Beyond the Dancing, which blended his indigenous heritage with his rural background; meeting the woman who would steal his heart; recording in Nashville; and, finally, releasing True Believer, the album that really launched his career. The multiple Golden Guitar, APRA, ARIA and Deadlys winner also lets us in on some of the life lessons he learned the hard way, lessons that kept this prodigiously talented Aussie on the straight and narrow (most of the time). Things I Carry Around, is the warm, genuine, and inspiring story of a young indigenous Australian who had a dream and turned that dream into reality. 'Troy's a true gentleman, warm and genuine, always a pleasure to be around. He sings straight from his heart and straight from the heart of his country.' Paul Kelly

Laura Jane Grace

Laura Jane Grace

As a teenager, she struggled with drug addiction and depression, found punk rock and lost herself in the nihilism and anarchism which created the foundation for Against Me!.With Against Me! came success not to mention the dissolute life of a rock star. The national stardom only further fueled Grace's struggles with identity and addiction. And, finally in 2012 Grace went public withRolling Stone magazine, and began her transition to Laura Jane Grace, leaving Thomas James Gable behind forever.Peppered throughout with Laura Jane's never-before-published journal entries that reach back to childhood, KILL ME LOUDLY is an intensely personal and revelatory look inside sex, drugs, failed marriages, music, and soul of a punk rock icon.
