Tool of War

By Paolo Bacigalupi

  • Paperback
  • £8.99

From New York Times bestselling and multi-award-winning author Paolo Bacigalupi comes the third novel set in the eerily prescient future established in his Printz Award winner Ship Breaker, now in paperback.

From Printz Award winner and National Book Award finalist Paolo Bacigalupi comes the third companion novel in the dystopic Ship Breaker universe. Set in a future swamped by rising seas, depleted resources, corporate government, and civil war, this novel stars the most provocative, most talked-about, most controversial character from Paolo Bacigalupi's highly acclaimed books Ship Breaker and The Drowned Cities, and pulls no punches in exploring the gray areas between what it means to be human--and animal.

An attack on the Drowned Cities leaves Tool, a part-human, part-animal super-soldier with heightened physical abilities, on the run. His pack of compatriots is destroyed, and his only allies are humans whom he can't afford to trust. But now he must resist his bioengineered impulse of loyalty toward his masters and embark on an all-out war against those who have enslaved him.

Virginia Boecker

When Lady Katharine's father is killed for being a practicing Catholic, she discovers that wasn't the only secret he'd been hiding. He'd also been involved in a plot to overthrow Queen Elizabeth. But what she doesn't know is that the play is not just a play. It's a plot to root out Catholic insurrectionists and destroy the rebellion once and for all.The mastermind behind this ruse is Toby Ellis, a young spy for the queen with secrets of his own. When Toby and Katharine are cast opposite each other as the play's leads, they find themselves inexplicably drawn to one another. But the closer they grow, the more precarious their positions become. And soon they learn that star-crossed love, mistaken identity, and betrayal are far more dangerous off the stage than on.

Don't Touch My Hair!

Sharee Miller
Authors:
Sharee Miller

It seems that wherever Aria goes, someone wants to touch her hair. In the street, strangers reach for her fluffy curls; and even under the sea, in the jungle, and in space, she's chased by a mermaid, monkeys, and poked by aliens... until, finally, Aria has had enough! This humorous picture book speaks to a national conversation on strangers touching black hair (from Solange's song "Don't Touch My Hair", to Phoebe Robinson's You Can't Touch My Hair), and sparks an important conversation on personal boundaries for children as Aria explains that her hair should not be touched without asking for permission first. Commercial, imaginative, and fun, Don't Touch My Hair! can be used to teach young readers about personal boundaries and asking for permission--and that it's all right to be told "no" as well.Author-illustrator Sharee Miller takes the tradition of appreciation of black hair to a fresh, commercial level, as she doesn't seek to convince or remind young readers that their curls are beautiful--she simply acknowledges black beauty while telling a fun, imaginative story.
