Alyssa Sheinmel's writing is so true, her characters so real, that they live on long after the last page is turned.
A compelling and beautifully told story
A tense and terrific read
A great story full of mystery, heartbreak, and hope
Intense, compelling, and wholly original
This compelling character study begins like a thriller-the mystery of what happened to her friend Agnes draws considerable suspense... it becomes a nuanced exploration of mental illness
As a narrator, Hannah is as irresistible as she is unreliable . . . Sheinmel is clear that her aim is not to educate about mental illness - but there's a journey of discovery here, nonetheless.
Thrillers can so often lean on a fuzzy sense of "insanity" to justify a character's behaviour, but the handling tends to be superficial; here it proves devastating. This is already one of my favourite books of the year.
Cunningly told . . . The author's cunning deployment of information keeps the reader guessing.
