Sunyata

The Life & Sayings of a Rare-Born Mystic

By Betty Camhi and Elliot Isenberg

  • Paperback
  • £P.O.R.

When Emmanuel Sorensen visited Ramana Maharshi in southern India, he was recognized by this sage as "one of the rare-born mystics." It was during Emmanuel's third visit to Ramana in 1940 that while he was just sitting quietly in meditation, he awared an effulgence especially radiated and directed upon his form. Suddenly out of the Silence came a telepathic message from Ramana in the form of these five English words: We Are Always Aware Sunyata. Emmanuel took Ramana's five words as recognition, initiation, mantra, and name. Thereafter, he referred to both himself and the hut in which he lived as Sunyata-which he translated as "full solid emptiness."Adyashanti writes: "Sunyata was the rarest of incarnations. A naturally born enlightened being of singular uniqueness and inventiveness. The story of his life is itself a profound spiritual teaching and a living example of how awakened spirit moves through the challenges of life. This is one of the best books on authentic enlightenment that you will ever read."
From the book: "I am not interested in what men can say with words-I am interested only in what they can say with their Silence. You must realize that men who talk very well, and who utter beautiful speeches, usually have a very bad Silence. What is really important is Silence, for it is a preparation for the Great Silence. Step by step as thou goeth, the Way shall open up to thee-thou art the Tao."

Fare Thee Well

Joel Selvin
Authors:
Joel Selvin

A tell-all biography of the epic in-fighting of the Grateful Dead in the years following band leader Jerry Garcia's death in 1995The Grateful Dead rose to greatness under the inspired leadership of guitarist Jerry Garcia, but the band very nearly died along with him. When Garcia passed away suddenly in August of 1995, the remaining band members experienced full crises of confidence and identity. So long defined by Garcia's vision for the group, the surviving "Core Four," as they came to be called, were reduced to conflicting agendas, strained relationships, and catastrophic business decisions that would leave the iconic band in shambles. Wrestling with how best to define their living legacy, the band made many attempts at restructuring, but it would take twenty years before relationships were mended enough for the Grateful Dead as fans remembered them to once again take the stage.Acclaimed music journalist and New York Timesbestselling author Joel Selvin was there for much of the turmoil following Garcia's death, and he'll offer a behind-the-scenes account of the ebbs and flows that occurred during the ensuing two decades. Plenty of books have been written about the rise of the Grateful Dead, but this final chapter of the band's history has never before been explored in detail. Culminating in the landmark tour bearing the same name, Fare Thee Wellcharts the arduous journey from Garcia's passing all the way up to the uneasy agreement between the Core Four that led to the series of shows celebrating the band's fiftieth anniversary and finally allowing for a proper, and joyous, sendoff of the group revered by so many.

When Spirit Leaps

Bonnie Greenwell
Authors:
Bonnie Greenwell

Whether it happens all at once or gradually over time, spiritual awakening is an experience that may be accompanied by great insight, ecstatic bliss, or a mystical infusion of light, love, and vision. But it can be an overwhelming experience, too, leaving those to whom it's occurred searching for answers and understanding. Written by a transpersonal psychologist and non-dual teacher, this book will help you understand the phenomenon of spiritual awakening, and provide guidance and support for you on your spiritual journey. At the heart of most spiritual traditions is the understanding that we are one with all of existence. This realization, also known as spiritual awakening or spiritual emergence, can occur spontaneously, after years of spiritual practice, or through many other portals. Although awakening is often considered a purely positive experience, many people are not prepared for the ramifications of such a life-altering event. When your perception of yourself and reality has been altered, you may find yourself with more questions than answers. Where can you turn?Based on over thirty years of case studies, as well as the author's own experiences, When Spirit Leaps explores the why and what of spiritual awakening, revealing how this phenomenon occurs across all traditions, and exploring the various ways it can happen. Including discussions on kundalini energy, meditation, yoga and qigong, breathwork, near-death experiences, and much more, this inspirational book offers companionship and practical solutions to common challenges along the spiritual path of awakening. With this book as your guide, you'll gain a deep understanding of the process and different portals of awakening, and find comfort and support in the real-life stories of those who have experienced this shift in consciousness and faced its challenges. Most importantly, you'll learn how you can embody this awakening and live joyfully and effectively without attachment to a personal sense of self, but as the oneness with all that is your true nature. No matter where you are on your spiritual journey, this book will help you along the way.

Being Aware of Being Aware

Rupert Spira
Authors:
Rupert Spira

Everybody is aware, all seven billion of us. We are aware of thoughts, feelings, sensations, and perceptions. All people share the experience of being aware, but relatively few people are aware that they are aware. Most people's lives consist of a flow of thoughts, images, ideas, feelings, sensations, sights, sounds, and so on. Very few people ask, "What is it that knows this flow of thoughts, feelings, and perceptions? With what am I aware of my experience?"The knowing of our being-or rather, awareness's knowing of its own being in us-is our primary experience, our most fundamental and intimate experience. It is in this experience that all the peace, happiness, and love we have ever longed for reside. The happiness we have sought for so long outside of ourselves, in situations, objects, and relationships, turns out to be always present, always available, in the simple knowing of our own being as it is. The knowing of our own being shines in each one of us as the experience "I am" or "I am aware," or simply as the thought "I." Because this simplest, most obvious, most familiar, and intimate experience is to the mind not a thing, or nothing, it is overlooked or forgotten by the vast majority of humanity. The overlooking of our own being is the root cause of all unhappiness and, therefore, the root cause of our search for happiness. What is the nature of this experience of being aware? The contemplations in this collection will lead readers toward their own experiential understanding of that which we all call "I."Being Aware of Being Aware is the first and introductory volume in the Essence of Meditation series of collected meditations on the fundamentals of non-duality. Each volume will include six essays, compiled from contemplations led by Rupert Spira at retreats. Future titles include The Nature of Mind, I Am, and The Nature of Happiness.

The Unspeakable Loss

Nisha Zenoff
Authors:
Nisha Zenoff

Charting the long path from shock, trauma, and overwhelming pain, to a life that once again contains joy, love, and laughter, The Unspeakable Loss addresses the importance of self-care and also provides a needed view into how the death of a child affects siblings and other family members. Written in a Q & A format, The Unspeakable Loss goes deeply to the heart of grief, answering the urgent questions that accompany loss. "Will my tears ever stop?" "Who am I now without my child?" "How can I help my other children cope?" "Will my marriage survive?" "Will life ever feel worth living again?" By directly answering the questions raised by grief, The Unspeakable Loss speaks wisely and compassionately, offering bite-sized chunks of wisdom in language the bereaved can absorb. Addressing parents no matter where they are in their grief cycle, whether newly bereaved or dealing with a death that occurred many years earlier, the book offers insight from other bereaved parents, as well as Zenoff's personal story. While books on grief have sadness at their core, the best ones also contain invaluable wisdom. The Unspeakable Loss emphasizes hope and recovery above all. While it doesn't flinch from the reality and pain of parental loss, ultimately it is a book about embracing life.

Angry White Men, 2nd Edition

Michael Kimmel
Authors:
Michael Kimmel

We hear them on talk radio airwaves bellowing about minorities. We watch them organize anti-immigration demonstrations on the border. We read their opinions regarding the demise of white male privilege. And sometimes, tragically, we witness their aggression through vigilante violence, as in the cases of Wade Michael Page, James Eagan Holmes, Elliot Rodger, George Zimmerman, and many more. They are America's angry white men, including "men's rights" activists who think white men are the victims of discrimination, as well as members of the "white wing" of the rightward fringes of the American political spectrum. Why are they so angry?Sociologist Michael Kimmel, one of the leading writers on men and masculinity in the world today, has spent hundreds of hours in the company of America's angry white men in pursuit of an answer. Raised to expect unparalleled social and economic privilege, white men are suffering today from what Kimmel calls "aggrieved entitlement": a sense that those benefits that white men believed were their due have been snatched away from them. In Angry White Men, Kimmel presents a comprehensive diagnosis of their fears, anxieties, and rage.

The Nature of Consciousness

Rupert Spira
Authors:
Rupert Spira

Our world culture is founded on the assumption that the Big Bang gave rise to matter, which in time evolved into the world, into which the body was born, inside which a brain appeared, out of which consciousness at some late stage developed. As a result of this "matter model," most of us believe that consciousness is a property of the body. We feel that it is "I," this body, that knows or is aware of the world. We believe and feel that the knowing with which we are aware of our experience is located in and shares the limits and destiny of the body. This is the fundamental presumption of mind and matter that underpins almost all our thoughts and feelings and is expressed in our activities and relationships. The Nature of Consciousness suggests that the matter model has outlived its function and is now destroying the very values it once sought to promote. For many people, the debate as to the ultimate reality of the universe is an academic one, far removed from the concerns and demands of everyday life. After all, life happens independently of our models of it. However, The Nature of Consciousness will clearly show that the materialist paradigm is a philosophy of despair and, as such, the root cause of unhappiness in individuals. It is a philosophy of conflict and, as such, the root cause of hostilities between families, communities, and nations. Far from being abstract and philosophical, its implications touch each one of us directly and intimately. An exploration of the nature of consciousness has the power to reveal the peace and happiness that truly lie at the heart of experience. Our experience never ceases to change, but the knowing element in all experience-consciousness, or what we call "I"-itself never changes. The knowing with which all experience is known is always the same knowing. Being the common, unchanging element in all experience, consciousness does not share the qualities of any particular experience: it is not qualified, conditioned, or limited by experience. The knowing with which a feeling of loneliness or sorrow is known is the same knowing with which the thought of a friend, the sight of a sunset, or the taste of ice cream is known. Just as a screen is never disturbed by the action in a movie, so consciousness is never disturbed by experience; thus it is inherently peaceful. The peace that is inherent in us-indeed that is us-is not dependent on the situations or conditions we find ourselves in. In a series of essays that draw you, through your own direct experience, into an exploration of the nature of this knowing element that each of us calls "I," The Nature of Consciousness posits that consciousness is the fundamental reality of the apparent duality of mind and matter. It shows that the overlooking or ignoring of this reality is the root cause of the existential unhappiness that pervades and motivates most people's lives, as well as the wider conflicts that exist between communities and nations. Conversely, the book suggests that the recognition of the fundamental reality of consciousness is the first step in the quest for lasting happiness and the foundation for world peace.

Embodied Enlightenment

Amoda Maa
Authors:
Amoda Maa

In Embodied Enlightenment, contemporary spiritual teacher Amoda Maa Jeevan dispels the outdated view of a transcendent enlightenment and instead presents a new, feminine expression of awakened consciousness for all-one that is felt and known through what our everyday lives are made of: our emotions, bodies, intimate relationships, work, and life's purpose. This book is a direct invitation to awaken in a profound, embodied way, and to participate in a collective evolution that can create a new world. When many of us think of enlightenment, we may envision a life of seclusion and contemplation, transcending the body and worldly attachments, or the achievement of karmic perfection. But what if, rather than something reserved for the mountaintop meditator or sage, the call to awaken is meant for us all? And how can we consciously live that awakening in the midst of our complex, messy, modern lives?Speaking from her own awakened experience, Amoda Maa Jeevan offers a timeless wisdom, busting some of the common myths about enlightenment and addressing topics often excluded from more traditional spiritual conversations-from the connection between consciousness and the body to relationships to planetary health. In addition, she covers the unfamiliar territory of what happens after enlightenment, delving into awakened action, creative expression, and more. There's an urgency today to evolve beyond humanity's current ego-based paradigm, and along with it, a unique expression of enlightenment is emerging. With clarity, passion, and grace, Embodied Enlightenment invites you on an exploration of consciousness that embraces both the messiness of your earthly experience and the non-duality of pure awareness, offering guidance on how your daily life can bring you into alignment with a divine destiny of individual and collective awakening.

The Unbelievable Happiness of What Is

Jon Bernie, Adyashanti
Authors:
Jon Bernie, Adyashanti

What do you really want-isn't it happiness? And what keeps you from being happy? Could it be that your need to cling so tightly to what you believe-about yourself and life, about how things should be-is what's holding you back? In The Unbelievable Happiness of What Is, a contemporary spiritual teacher in the non-duality tradition reveals how confronting and letting go of our negative beliefs about ourselves and the world ultimately sets us on the path toward an awakened life of profound joy, meaning, and purpose. We all want peace and freedom and love and happiness, we all want to be fulfilled, but so many of us fail to reach the level of contentment we've built up in our minds, often believing there's something wrong with us and blaming ourselves, others, or circumstances for our perceived lack of accomplishment or satisfaction. But the truth is, happiness is not something you have to get or achieve, because it's something you already have-in fact, it's what you already are. With this book, author Jon Bernie-counselor, healer, and teacher in the lineage of Adyashanti-sheds light on the struggle to find happiness, showing how our unexamined beliefs distort our identities and make us suffer by creating unconscious tension in our bodies and minds. You'll learn how to bring awareness to these patterns and begin to unravel the tightly held, negative beliefs that have overshadowed your existence, finally moving through them and into a brightening of experience and the realization of true happiness, liberation, peace, and fulfillment.Using this compassionate, heart-centered approach, you'll work with your feelings rather than resist them, and find guidance and support in surrendering to the relief of not knowing. You'll also learn to relax into and live asawareness in your day-to-day life. Most importantly, you'll discover that which you've been seeking but has never really been out of reach-something that is, indeed, beyond belief: the unbelievable happiness of accepting what is.

Non-Duality Questions, Non-Duality Answers

Richard Sylvester
Authors:
Richard Sylvester

Since time immemorial, key questions about the nature of existence have nagged at our consciousness: What am I? Why am I here? What is this anyway? And for years, non-duality author, humanistic psychologist, and therapist Richard Sylvester received questions like these, along with deeply personal inquiries on non-duality and intimate spiritual experiences, from people seeking honest answers. Now those questions and responses are available to you.You may have sought answers to these fundamental inquiries in religion, solitude, the company of family and friends, or conversations with gurus, priests, and philosophers. Even so, you may be living with lingering doubts about what you've been conditioned to believe, feeling "lost on the path" or otherwise frustrated with organized religion or the indirectness and prescriptiveness of spiritual teachings. With Non-Duality Questions, Non-Duality Answers, you'll find that self-inquiry can help you end the cycle of inadequacy and searching-that liberation through non-dual awareness is possible-and that no query is too ridiculous or big for the discussion at hand.Designed to answer questions as they arise, this book sheds spirituality and non-duality of its vague and amorphous prescriptions. With a unique blend of patience, compassion, respect, provocation, and humor, Sylvester shows that we are all united in our worrying and striving, and gives you a glimpse of the Oneness that is so hard to describe but is so easily felt.

Goner

Louis Brawley
Authors:
Louis Brawley

Louis Brawley met UG Krishnamurti in 2002 and spent the following five years travelling with him in the USA, India and Europe keeping a record of this remarkable non-teacher and documenting his own inner struggles as his ideas about life, love and Enlightenment were constantly tossed around and demolished. Louis fell into the role of foil and sidekick to UG's bizarre interactions with his friends and audience and, as UG's health deteriorated, he became his informal caregiver.Louis Brawley doesn't use honeyed platitudes to tell the story of a sage and his devoted follower; instead he tells an often unflattering story of his own struggles and shortcomings and the dynamic uncertainties of life with a man who "tore apart everything human beings have built up inside and out for centuries."Goner will teach you the meaning of the phrase "paradoxical truth". UG Krishnamurti gave up everything for truth, but delighted in ridiculous fabrications; he was a teacher who refused to teach, a man who mocked do-gooders but was deeply kind; he was chaste but foul mouthed, he was a man who decried the supernatural ... yet there were strange coincidences around him. "...the way he lived, his living quarters and his mode of expression were one continuous movement, a three dimensional, living book of teaching. If you were observant, you could learn from him on contact with no need for explanation."

Dismantling the Fantasy

Darryl Bailey
Authors:
Darryl Bailey

If you move into the deepest teachings of any great spiritual tradition, at some point you must move beyond the tradition itself and any idea of enlightenment. What is it that remains when the spiritual path, and even enlightenment, is transcended? Dismantling the Fantasy is a consideration of the movement out of thought itself. This may sound extreme or even impossible, but again it is a simple consideration of our potential, and you can easily understand it from the life experience you already have.
