We can all get angry from time to time but when it gets out of hand it can have a serious impact on many aspects of our lives. As well as having an impact on our physical and mental health and our ability to engage in healthy relationships, it can also potentially have an enormous impact on society. The media is rife with stories of domestic violence, tragic stories of shaken babies, road-rage incidents and bullying.Mounting evidence suggests that all this anger can be harmful to us in a number of different ways. As well as the enormously damaging impact chronic anger can have on our relationships with other people, it is being linked to health problems such as cardiovascular disease and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and mental illnesses such as depression and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). This invaluable self-help guide will enable the reader to recognise their personal anger problems, gain an understanding of what lies behind their anger, and use techniques based on Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT) to deal with their anger more effectively. CFT was initially developed by Professor Paul Gilbert, author of The Compassionate Mind, to treat those with high levels of self-criticism. It uses the proven, research-based techniques of CBT and other therapies with a special focus on the importance of developing inner compassion, in order to alleviate feelings of shame, develop a more balanced outlook and promote resilience. It incorporates elements of mindfulness and Tibetan Buddhism with recent research on human development and studies of the brain. Choden

Formally a monk for seven years within the Tibetan Buddhist tradition, CHODEN completed a three year, three month retreat in 1997 and has been a practicing Buddhist since 1985. Born as Sean McGovern, he is originally from South Africa where he trained as a lawyer and learned meditation under the guidance of Rob Nairn, an internationally renowned Buddhist teacher.Choden is now involved in developing secular mindfulness and compassion programmes drawing upon the wisdom and methods of the Buddhist tradition, as well as contemporary insights from psychology and neuroscience. He is an honorary fellow of the University of Aberdeen and teaches on their Postgraduate Study Programme in Mindfulness (MSc) that is the first of its kind to include compassion in its curriculum. He lives on the Isle of Arran.

Chris Irons

Dr Chris Irons is a clinical psychologist, researcher, author and trainer. He is co-director of Balanced Minds (www.balancedminds.com), a London-based organisation providing compassion focused psychological interventions for individuals and organisations. He is the author of a number of books, including The Compassionate Mind Workbook.

Christopher Willard

Christopher Willard, PsyD, is a psychologist and psychotherapist at Tufts University and in private practice in the Boston, MA, area specializing in mindfulness-based treatment of adolescents and young adults. He has worked with adolescents for over a decade with experience as a therapist in the inner city, and a special education teacher in a therapeutic school. A student of meditation, he has studied and sat on retreats with many of the great contemporary teachers in both Asia and North America. He recently joined the board of directors at the Institute for Meditation and Psychotherapy, where he has served on the faculty for the past three years.

David A. Clark

David A. Clark is one of the best respected names in the field of CBT, with more than 30 years of experience. David Pearson

Dr David Pearson is a Consultant Clinical Psychologist with a career in the NHS, both as a clinician and manager of services. Together with Dr Fiona Kennedy he has co-edited Cognitive Behavioural Approaches to the Understanding and Treatment of Dissociation (Routledge 2013). David has also co-authored The Dream Mentoring Manuals, which form a training scheme in mental health by demystifying technical/clinical terms into everyday language. David has also published in a wide range of peer reviewed scientific journals as well as articles in mental health/psychology professional magazines. On a personal level David has found the production of The Dream Mentoring Manuals a great challenge as they provide the basis of available training schemes designed to work with children who are disadvantaged and often on the edges of survival.

Elaine Beaumont

Elaine Beaumont PhD is a Lecturer in Counselling and Psychotherapy at Salford University and has spent over 15 years working in Education and the Counselling and Psychotherapy profession.Elaine is a BABCP Accredited Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapist and Europe Approved Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing Practitioner and provides psychotherapy for organisations including Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service. Elaine also provides clinical supervision for individuals who work for Anxiety UK, The Priory Hospital and Beacon Counselling Services.Elaine's academic interests focus on exploring the effectiveness of therapeutic interventions, compassion in healthcare, knowledge, theory and practice of counselling and psychotherapy, mental health provision, and the importance of practitioner self-care.

Fiona Kennedy

Dr Fiona Kennedy is a Consultant Clinical Psychologist and MD of GreenWood Mentors Ltd. She has a background in the NHS providing and managing clinical psychology and counselling services. She has research interests in the consequences for adults of childhood adversity, including dissociation. She has published a variety of peer reviewed papers, book chapters and recently co-edited Cognitive Behavioural Approaches to the Understanding and Treatment of Dissociation (Routledge 2013). Along with Dr David Pearson she authored The Dream Mentoring Manual in 2011 and The Dream Mentoring Trainer's Manual in 2012, published in India by Dream a Dream NGO and used to support their life skills training programs for disadvantaged young people. She trains and supervises others as well as providing therapy using CBT, DBT and ACT. She is most interested in having a life worth living and enabling others to have the same.

Georg H. Eifert

Georg H. Eifert, PhD, is professor emeritus of psychology and former associate dean of the School of Health and Life Sciences at Chapman University in Orange, CA. He is coauthor of The Mindfulness Workbook for Anxiety and The Anorexia Workbook.

John P. Forsyth
