Formally a monk for seven years within the Tibetan Buddhist tradition, CHODEN completed a three year, three month retreat in 1997 and has been a practicing Buddhist since 1985. Born as Sean McGovern, he is originally from South Africa where he trained as a lawyer and learned meditation under the guidance of Rob Nairn, an internationally renowned Buddhist teacher.Choden is now involved in developing secular mindfulness and compassion programmes drawing upon the wisdom and methods of the Buddhist tradition, as well as contemporary insights from psychology and neuroscience. He is an honorary fellow of the University of Aberdeen and teaches on their Postgraduate Study Programme in Mindfulness (MSc) that is the first of its kind to include compassion in its curriculum. He lives on the Isle of Arran.

Chris Johnstone

Dr Chris Johnstone is one of the UK's leading resilience trainers, with more than three decades' experience teaching in this field. He graduated in medicine with distinction in 1986, after a first degree specialising in psychology. Experiencing burnout and depression as a junior hospital doctor, he became a leading figure in the campaign to improve working conditions. He trained as a GP before moving into the mental-health field, where for many years he ran groups teaching resilience skills. Influenced much by positive psychology, he trained with Martin Seligman and other leading practitioners in 2005. Since then he has pioneered the role of resilience training in mental-health promotion, coaching practice and the workplace. His previous book Active Hope (co-authored with Joanna Macy) has been published in more than eight languages, his video-based online course Personal Resilience in an Hour has participants from more than 55 countries. Colin Espie

Colin A. Espie PhD, DSc is Professor of Sleep Medicine in the Nuffield Department of Clinical Neuroscience and a Fellow of Somerville College, University of Oxford. Professor Silove is the author of Overcoming Panic and the Overcoming Panic and Agoraphobia Self-help Course, along with Vijaya Manicavasagar. He is a clinical psychiatrist and Director of the Centre for Population Mental Health Research and the Psychiatry Research and Teaching Unit at the School of Psychiatry, the University of New South Wales. He has worked for many years in the area of anxiety and traumatic stress, his main area of clinical work, research, service development and teaching.

Dr Devora Lieberman

Devora Lieberman joined Genea in 2003, when it was still called Sydney IVF. Prior to that, Devora had spent 3 years as Associate Medical Director, Women's Health at Organon (now part of MSD). Devora now devotes most of her clinical work to infertility and miscarriage management. Devora has also been a clinician in the Menopause Clinic at Sydney's Royal North Shore Hospital since her arrival in Australia in 1998. She served as President of Family Planning NSW from June 2003 to March 2014. She became a Director of Sexual Health and Family Planning Australia in 2003, and served as its President from 2006-2008. Devora has also been a Director of the Board of the Fertility Society of Australia from 2005-2013, and held the office of Vice President from 2007-2009. Devora has presented at regional and national conferences and has contributed to textbooks and several peer-reviewed publications.

Frances Cole

Dr Frances Cole was a GP and pain rehabilitation specialist. She developed the first UK primary and community care pain rehabilitation programme based on cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) principles in 1996. She developed a pain health needs assessment tool that won an NHS Modernisation award in 2005 and gained an NHS National Clinical Leaders Award in 2011. Frances is a past chair of the British Pain Society Pain Management Programme Special Interest Group whose current focus is on multidisciplinary pain management. Her current work is on digital self-management tools for pain including apps.

Hugh Mackay

Hugh Mackay is a social researcher and bestselling author. He has a master's degree in moral philosophy and was one of the founders of the St James Ethics Centre. He has been awarded honorary doctorates by five Australian universities and is a Fellow of the Australian Psychological Society. In 2015, he was appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia. He lives in Canberra.

Jamil Zaki

JAMIL ZAKI received his Ph.D. in psychology from Columbia University, and then conducted postdoctoral research at the Harvard University Center for Brain Sciences. He is now a Professor of Psychology at Stanford University and the Director of the Stanford Social Neuroscience Lab. His research focuses on the cognitive and neural bases of social behaviour, and in particular on how people understand each other's emotions (empathic accuracy), why they conform to each other (social influence), and why they choose to help each other (altruism). His work on empathy has been well received in the academic community. He has published over 50 articles, spoken at about 100 conferences around the world, and received awards from organizations including the National Science Foundation, the Association for Psychological Science, the Society for Neuroscience, the Society for Personality and Social Psychology, and Harvard and Stanford Universities. He is also passionate about applying this research, and has joined forces with many people outside academia to help advise and test empathy-building interventions. Jamil is an avid science communicator for years, devoting great energy to helping the public understand their power of empathy. He has written about how a "choice view" of empathy speaks to policing (for The New Yorker), parenting (for The Atlantic Monthly), philanthropy (for The New York Times) and medicine (for Nautilus Magazine). He has also written about empathy and pro-sociality for Scientific American and WIRED. His outreach efforts have broadened even further more recently, through The Lutz Experiment (forthcoming from Simon & Schuster), a collaborative book project with the comedian and writer John Lutz (SNL, 30 Rock, The Late Show with Seth Myers).

Mandy Bryon

Dr Mandy Bryon is a Consultant Clinical Psychologist and Head of Psychology and Play Services at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children, London. Mandy has worked as the psychologist for the cystic fibrosis team since 1990. She lectures extensively within the UK and internationally on psychosocial aspects of childhood illness, particularly cystic fibrosis, to professional and parent audiences. Mandy has presented to national and international audiences at cystic fibrosis conferences.
