Biographical Notes

Frances Cole (Author)
Dr Frances Cole was a GP and pain rehabilitation specialist. She developed the first UK primary and community care pain rehabilitation programme based on cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) principles in 1996. She developed a pain health needs assessment tool that won an NHS Modernisation award in 2005 and gained an NHS National Clinical Leaders Award in 2011. Frances is a past chair of the British Pain Society Pain Management Programme Special Interest Group whose current focus is on multidisciplinary pain management. Her current work is on digital self-management tools for pain including apps.

Helen Macdonald (Author)
Helen Macdonald is the author of Overcoming Chronic Pain, along with Frances Cole, Catherine Carus and Hazel Howden-Leach. She is a cognitive behavioural psychotherapist and obtained a Master's Degree in Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapy, with a dissertation examining the effectiveness of assisted self-help for chronic pain. She was recognized as a Chartered Health Psychologist in March 2004.

Catherine Carus (Author)
Catherine Carus is the author of Overcoming Chronic Pain, along with Frances Cole, Helen Macdonald and Hazel Howden-Leach. She is a registered physiotherapist currently teaching at the University of Bradford, and she specializes in the assessment and management of musculoskeletal conditions.

Hazel Howden-Leach (Author)
Hazel Howden-Leach is the author of Overcoming Chronic Pain, along with Frances Cole, Helen Macdonald and Catherine Carus. David Veale

David is the author of Overcoming Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and Manage Your Mood, along with Rob Willson. He is a consultant psychiatrist in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy at the South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust and the Priory Hospital, North London. He is an Honorary Senior Lecturer at the Institute of Psychiatry, King's College London. Jeremy Gauntlett-Gilbert

Dr Gauntlett-Gilbert is the author of Overcoming Weight Problems, along with Clare Grace. Until very recently he worked at London's only specialist NHS clinic for overweight people. He is a clinical psychologist and his areas of special interest are weight issues and chronic pain. Dr Gauntlett is a member of both the British Psychological Society and British Association for Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapies (BABCP).

Mark Freeston

Mark is the Director of Research and Training at the Newcastle Cognitive and Behavioural Therapies Centre and Honorary Professor of Clinical Psychology at the University of Durham. He is also Professor of Clinical Psychology at the University of Newcastle. He divides his time between NHS duties, where he directs the Newcastle Diploma in Cognitive Therapy, and the University of Newcastle. He has published over 80 papers, mainly in the field of intrusive thoughts and worry and on the formulation and treatment of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and Generalized Anxiety Disorder. He regularly provides workshops on the cognitive behavioural treatment of these disorders. He chaired the Guideline Development Group for Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and Body Dysmorphic Disorder for the National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE) from 2003 to 2005.

Michael Crowe

Dr. Michael Crowe was a founder member of both the British Association for Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapy (BABCP) and the Institute of Family Therapy in London. He worked as a psychiatrist for almost 30 years at the Maudsley Hospital, London and was honorary Senior Lecturer at the Institute of Psychiatry (Kings College, London). Since retirement he works in private practise and continues to teach and lecture.

Paul Gilbert

Professor Paul Gilbert is the author of the bestselling Overcoming Depression and was previously Professor of Clinical Psychology at the University of Derby and Head of Specialty, Adult Mental Health for the Southern Derbyshire Mental Health Trust. He has been involved in treating people with depression and anxiety for the past twelve years.

Russ Harris

Dr Russ Harris was born in Liverpool, England. After graduating in medicine from the University of Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, he emigrated to Australia. As a family doctor, he became increasingly interested in the psychological aspects of medical illness (and increasingly less interested in writing prescriptions). In his eclectic career, he has been a stand-up comedian, sex therapist, filmmaker, novelist, and workshop presenter. He now practices as a psychological health physician in Melbourne.
