How to Manage Cravings, Reduce Stress, and Stop Hating Your Body

By Carolyn Coker Ross

When it comes to addiction, abstinence isn't always the right answer-and with food addiction, it's impossible. For readers stuck in a cycle of binging, overeating, and restricting, physician Carolyn Coker Ross offers the proven-effective Anchor ProgramT

Isn't it time you got off the diet treadmill? In The Food Addiction Recovery Workbook, physician Carolyn Coker Ross offers the proven-effective Anchor ProgramT to help you curb cravings, end body dissatisfaction, manage stress and emotions without food, and truly satisfy your soul.

If you're struggling with obesity or food addiction, you've probably been told that you must deprive yourself of certain foods in order to lose weight. You may have also been convinced-by the media and by our culture-that if you finally become thin your life will be better, you'll be happier, and your suffering will come to an end.

The problem is-it's not all about the food. It's about how food is used to self-soothe, to numb ourselves against the pain of living or to cope with stress and unresolved emotions. Even as your waist whittles away, the problems that caused your food addiction won't disappear.

The Anchor ProgramT approach detailed in this workbook is not about dieting. It's about being anchored to your true, authentic self. When you find your unique anchor, you will relate better to your body, you will know intuitively how to feed your body, and you will reach the weight that's right for you. Anyone who's been on the diet treadmill-losing and regaining lost weight-will admit that losing weight doesn't instantly bring health or happiness. That's because losing weight is a red herring for the real issue, the misuse of food to solve a problem that has nothing to do with food.

This book offers a whole-person approach that blends practical information on managing stress and regulating emotions without relying on food. If you're ready to uncover the true cause of your food addiction, you'll finally be able to embrace a balanced diet and reach the weight that's right for you.

Back, Sack & Crack (& Brain)

Robert Wells
Authors:
Robert Wells

Rob Wells has spent much of his adult life coping with chronic pain of different kinds - an embarrassing bowel problem in his early 20s, recurring testicular pain in his late 20s and 30s, and back problems requiring spinal surgery in his early 40s. Consistent through these experiences has been a feeling of being passed from pillar to post by the medical community, seemingly at a loss to explain the cause of these issues, or to find a lasting solution for them. This hilarious and brutally frank graphic memoir tells Rob's story, taking us through emergency surgery for a misdiagnosed twisted testicle, the extremes of weight loss and weight gain, the insides of far too many public toilets, and having to resort to walking with a cane. As Rob's back, sack and crack all became causes for concern so too did his brain, as his recurring problems unsurprisingly left him with depression and agoraphobia. This is the warm and witty story of a man's battle with his own body, and with the medical industry that couldn't quite appreciate the problem. For anyone who has ever felt let down by their doctors, or who has suffered with chronic pain that shows no sign of subsiding, Rob Wells bravely invites you to really get to grips with his balls.

The Nordic Guide to Living 10 Years Longer

Dr. Bertil Marklund
Authors:
Dr. Bertil Marklund

Healthy living guides are all the rage (not to mention all things Scandi), but they can be too prescriptive or long. Who has time to read 300 pages or the discipline for a total lifestyle change overnight? Cue The Nordic Guide to Living 10 Years Longer. Dr Bertil Marklund - a doctor and researcher at the Gothenburg University with over 40 years of experience - provides the most cutting-edge research to explain the 10 areas he feels we should focus on to better our chances of a long life: Exercise, Time to Recharge, Sleep, Sunbathing, Food, Drink, Weight, Teeth, Attitude and Relationships. This guide provides wisdom from the Nordics, a region long known for its healthy and progressive lifestyle. It debunks myths on things we have been told are not good for us but actually can be, for example, did you know drinking lots of coffee will promote your health? Or that more people die of lack of Vitamin D than they do of skin cancer? The Danes may have their Hygge and the Norwegians their back to the land books, but the Swedes have a 'sundhet', more or less translated to 'soundness', a balanced, even keeled approach to a life of moderation. In general, Swedes are very healthy when it comes to food and exercise, and part of the key to this 'soundness' is that nothing is done at its extreme. Everything is incorporated over time and in steps into work and family life so as to make it manageable and sustainable.

The Big Fix

Tracey Helton Mitchell
Authors:
Tracey Helton Mitchell

After surviving nearly a decade of heroin abuse and hard living on the streets of San Francisco's Tenderloin District, Tracey Helton Mitchell decided to get clean for good. With raw honesty and a poignant perspective on life that only comes from starting at rock bottom, Tracey tells her story of transformation from homeless heroin addict to stable mother of three-and the hard work and hard lessons that got her there. Rather than dwelling on the pain of addiction, The Big Fix focuses on her journey of recovery and rebuilding her life, while exposing the failings of the American rehab system and laying out a path for change. Starting with the first step in her recovery, Tracey re-learns how to interact with men, build new friendships, handle money, and rekindle her relationship with her mother, all while staying sober, sharp, and dedicated to her future.A decidedly female story of addiction, The Big Fix describes the unique challenges faced by women caught in the grip of substance abuse, such as the toxic connection between drug addition and prostitution. Tracey's story of hope, hard work, and rehabilitation will inspire anyone who has been affected by substance abuse while offering hope for a better future.

Management Starts With You is a wise, honest and practical guide to success in this challenging but fascinating role.Among many powerful insights we learn that:. Before we can successfully manage others we first need to manage ourselves.· Most of us do not naturally know how to manage, but we can learn.· Life as a manager is easier when we stop thinking about the effect of our actions on ourselves and think instead about their effect on others.· People don't want to be managed, but they absolutely need the security of being led.· Being respected is much more important than being liked!· Traditional time management techniques don't work for managers, so we need to rethink our approach to this most precious of all resources.· What we focus on we get more of; so we need to focus on the right things.
