Biographical Notes

Born in Texas and raised in Toronto, Michael grew up with travel on the brain, the result of time spent in the backseat of Oldsmobiles, Mini-mokes, and Pan Am jets under the influence of his Gourmet-addicted mother and his father's roving zoom lens. When Michael turned 18 he began living it up around the world, setting down temporary roots in cities such as Bordeaux, Paris, Montréal, New York, and Lisbon. During this time, he earned a BA in literature from McGill University and an MA in history and civilizations from the École des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales, where his thesis was "The Image of Brazil and Brazilians in Hollywood Cinema." He also worked as a writer and editor at magazines and newspapers and freelanced for publications such as The New York Times, The International Herald Tribune, and The Globe and Mail.Michael first traveled to Brazil at the age of four. His only memory of Rio de Janeiro is that of being served a glistening orange wedge of papaya in the grand dining room at the Hotel Glòria. Twenty years later, he returned to Brazil, where he was seduced by the intense, colourful landscapes and unique cultures. Michael eventually settled down in Salvador, the beautiful baroque capital of Bahia, where he has worked as a writer and journalist for the last decade. He has yet to master the art of preparing feijoada (Brazil's national stew of beans and salted beef and pork), but he does make a mean caipirinha.

You're More Powerful than You Think

Eric Liu
Authors:
Eric Liu

This is an age of epic political turbulence in America. Old hierarchies and institutions are collapsing. All the "givens" of civic life are no longer given. From the fracturing of the major political parties, to the spread of bottom-up movements like Black Lives Matter and $15 Now, citizens across the country and across the political spectrum are reclaiming power. It is no longer the exclusive domain of CEOs, political elites, and insiders from either political party. And the question that today's rising citizens have to face is: Are you ready? Do you understand power? And if you want to make change in the world, do you know how?The answers to all these questions are provided in Eric Liu's incisive book. In its pages, Liu lays out the elements and the strategies of citizen power, showing when to create a hashtag, when to call your Congressman, and when to take to the streets. (When you go, don't forget your camera.) Above all, Liu reminds us that *someone* always has power, which means if you're not participating, you're surrendering.Published in the early days of a new presidency, this book is not just a manual for power but an inspiring call to action. As Liu shows, voting is just one way of inciting change. So is protesting. What happens after the election, and after the march through the streets, is the real test of whether we the people can truly be we the powerful.

How to F*ck a Woman

Ali Adler
Authors:
Ali Adler

Brazen, uproarious, slyly prescriptive, and always entertaining, Ali Adler is a sex and relationship guru who knows what women want. As a gay woman, she has both the equipment and the experience to give straight men (and the women who love them) advice on both how to get more sex and how to get this job done right. In her day job as a comedy writer and TV producer, Ali is sometimes the only woman in a room full of comedy writers. She became legendary for offering frank, sometimes insightful, often bossy reality checks and for translating female sexuality into words a man could understand. In her book, How to F*ck a Woman - 20 percent explicit instructions, 80 percent relationship advice, and 100 percent hilarious - she brings together essential advice for men (even the ones who insist they could write this book) and the women who want their lovers to truly understand them, both mind and body. With illustrations by New Yorker cartoonist Liza Donnelly.
