Mammoth Books presents Death in the Promised Land

By Pat Cadigan

  • E-Book
  • £P.O.R.

'Death in the Promised Land' explores the potential dangers of becoming too closely involved in virtual reality. Parts of the story were later reworked into the novel Tea from an Empty Cup (1988), which had a sequel in Dervish is Digital (2001), both excellent examples of merging cyberpunk with the detective genre.

Biographical Notes

Pat Cadigan (b. 1953) has been a full-time writer since 1987 but for ten years before that, while working for the Hallmark Company, was involved as an editor on the small press magazines Chacal and Shayol, the latter still one of the most beautiful magazines ever published. Here appeared some of her earliest work including "Last Chance for Angina Pectoris at Miss Sadie's Saloon, Dry Gulch" (1977) which gave a good idea of the unconventional route her fiction would follow. She has been hailed as the "Queen of Cyberpunk" following her novel Synners (1991) which showed the potential dangers of becoming too closely involved in virtual reality.

Ender In Exile

Orson Scott Card
Authors:
Orson Scott Card

At first, Ender believed that they would bring him back to Earth as soon as things quieted down. But things were quiet now, had been quiet for a year, and it was plain to him now that they would not bring him back at all, that he was much more useful as a name and a story than he would ever be as an inconveniently flesh-and-blood person. At the close of ENDER'S GAME, Andrew Wiggin - called Ender by everyone - knows that he cannot live on Earth. He has become far more than just a boy who won a game: he is the Saviour of Earth, a hero, a military genius whose allegiance is sought by every nation of the newly shattered Earth Hegemony. He is offered the choice of living under the Hegemon's control, a pawn in his brother Peter's political games. Or he can join the colony ships and go out to settle one of the new worlds won in the war. The story of those years on the colony worlds has never been told . . . until now.

Brightness Reef

David Brin
Authors:
David Brin

On the distant planet of Jijo, six exiled races live side by side. Only ancient relics from their home planets, fragments of half-forgotten stories and the crumbling ruins of the mysterious and god-like Buyur remind the dispossessed of a more noble past, whe they were full citizens of the Five Galaxies. The races of Jijo, it seems, have been forgotten, along with whatever crimes thay committed. But for how long?It is at the time of the Gathering, the council of the sages, when the spacecraft is first spotted. For some, it offers a new hope. For others, it heralds a time of reckoning.Brightness Reef is the compelling story of a world threatened by its past and fighting for its future. With a gallery of extraordinary characters, and awealth of thought provoking ideas, it is a novel fuelled by the spirit of adventure and discovery. David Brin at his very best.
