Sensemaking

What Makes Human Intelligence Essential in the Age of the Algorithm

By Christian Madsbjerg
Read by Jeremy Maxwell

  • £P.O.R.

Based on his work at companies like Ford, Christian Madsbjerg's Sensemaking is a provocative stand against the tyranny of big data and scientism, an impassioned defense of an arts and humanities-based education, and a blueprint for how companies and leaders can use human intelligence to solve problems.

A FINANCIAL TIMES BUSINESS BOOK OF THE MONTH (APRIL 2017)

Humans have become subservient to algorithms. Every day brings a new Moneyball fix - a maths whiz who will crack open an industry with clean fact-based analysis rather than human intuition and experience. As a result, we have stopped thinking. Machines do it for us.

Christian Madsbjerg argues that our fixation with data often masks stunning deficiencies, and the risks for humankind are enormous. Blind devotion to number crunching imperils our businesses, our educations, our governments, and our life savings. Too many companies have lost touch with the humanity of their customers, while marginalising workers with arts-based skills.

Contrary to popular thinking, Madsbjerg shows how many of today's biggest success stories stem not from 'quant' thinking but from deep, nuanced engagement with culture, language, and history. He calls his method sensemaking.

In this landmark book, Madsbjerg lays out five principles for how business leaders, entrepreneurs, and individuals can use it to solve their thorniest problems. He profiles companies using sensemaking to connect with new customers, and takes readers inside the work process of sensemaking 'connoisseurs' like investor George Soros, architect Bjarke Ingels, and others.

Both practical and philosophical, Sensemaking is a powerful rejoinder to corporate groupthink and an indispensable resource for leaders and innovators who want to stand out from the pack.

The Happiness Dictionary

Tim Lomas
Authors:
Tim Lomas

Have you ever had a feeling that you couldn't quite describe, because no English word exists for it? Indeed, without such a word, it can make it difficult to remember or understand the feeling, and certainly to talk about it with other people. This applies to all aspects of life, and not least to that most sought-after of feelings, happiness, where our ability to experience and understand it is limited by the words at our disposal. However, all is not lost. Even if English has not created a word for a specific feeling, or indeed any phenomena, another language might have. These are known as 'untranslatable' words, terms which lack an exact equivalent in another language. If we can discover and learn these words, the boundaries of our world will expand accordingly. These words may allow us to give voice to feelings we've already hazily experienced, but have previously lacked the ability to conceptualise. They may even allow us to encounter new feelings that we hadn't previously been aware of or enjoyed. This book aims to introduce readers to a wealth of untranslatable terms relating to happiness, sourced from across the world's languages. As a result, their understanding and even experience of happiness will be enriched.

Lust for Love

Pamela Anderson, Shmuley Boteach
Authors:
Pamela Anderson, Shmuley Boteach

Pamela Anderson and Rabbi Shmuley Boteach guide readers on a path to healthier lust and intimacy in the bedroom in THE SENSUAL REVOLUTION.According to Anderson and the Rabbi, meaningful, passionate desire and sex are dying. We are inundated with sex and starved for it, obsessed with it in our culture yet seemingly clueless about it. We see it in high divorce rates, in the degradation of sexuality through pornography, and tasteless displays of empty, counterfeit erotica. Married couples have sex, on average, once a week--and for about ten minutes. Sex has become so trivialized, coarsened, and vulgarized that married couples no longer feel its pull. THE SENSUAL REVOLUTION embraces the idea that what our most important relationships need most is lust. Readers will learn what's sexy again, how to bring back romance, and to understand that in addition to love, we need lust to repair our unfulfilling sex lives and broken relationships.

Eduardo Galeano

Eduardo Galeano

The internationally acclaimed last work by the bestselling Latin American writerMaster storyteller Eduardo Galeano was unique among his contemporaries (Gabriel Garcia Marquez and Mario Vargas Llosa among them) for his commitment to retelling our many histories, including the stories of those who were disenfranchised. A philosopher poet, his nonfiction is infused with such passion and imagination that it matches the intensity and the appeal of Latin America's very best fiction.Published here for the first time in an elegant English translation by long-time collaborator Mark Fried, Hunter of Stories is a deeply considered collection of Galeano's final musings on history, memory, humour, tragedy and loss.Written in his signature style - vignettes that fluidly combine dialogue, fables, and anecdotes - every page displays the original thinking and compassion that made Galeano one of the most original and beloved voices in world literature.

Messy

Tim Harford
Authors:
Tim Harford

The urge to tidiness seems to be rooted deep in the human psyche. Many of us feel threatened by anything that is vague, unplanned, scattered around or hard to describe. We find comfort in having a script to rely on, a system to follow, in being able to categorise and file away.We all benefit from tidy organisation - up to a point. A large library needs a reference system. Global trade needs the shipping container. Scientific collaboration needs measurement units. But the forces of tidiness have marched too far. Corporate middle managers and government bureaucrats have long tended to insist that everything must have a label, a number and a logical place in a logical system. Now that they are armed with computers and serial numbers, there is little to hold this tidy-mindedness in check. It's even spilling into our personal lives, as we corral our children into sanitised play areas or entrust our quest for love to the soulless algorithms of dating websites. Order is imposed when chaos would be more productive. Or if not chaos, then . . . messiness. The trouble with tidiness is that, in excess, it becomes rigid, fragile and sterile. In Messy, Tim Harford reveals how qualities we value more than ever - responsiveness, resilience and creativity - simply cannot be disentangled from the messy soil that produces them. This, then, is a book about the benefits of being messy: messy in our private lives; messy in the office, with piles of paper on the desk and unread spreadsheets; messy in the recording studio, the laboratory or in preparing for an important presentation; and messy in our approach to business, politics and economics, leaving things vague, diverse and uncomfortably made-up-on-the-spot. It's time to rediscover the benefits of a little mess.
