A Passion for Pasta

Carmela Sophia Sereno
Authors:
Carmela Sophia Sereno

In A Passion for Pasta, everyone can take a delicious trip down Italy, from top to toe, led by 'pasta queen' Carmela Sereno - your guide to making speciality pasta dishes from each Italian region. With stunning photographs throughout, these recipes include: · Mandilli di Seta, handkerchief pasta with creamy pesto, from Liguria and the Italian Riviera. Liguria's capital, Genoa, is birthplace of the well-known basil pesto. · Orecchiete con cime di rape, which combines the speciality pasta of Puglia, orecchiete (translated as 'little ears'), with the humble turnip to produce a dish full of flavour and yet typical of Puglia's unique style of cooking, cucina povera. · Ziti with sardines, chicory and breadcrumbs. Ziti pasta come in many sizes from the length of small maccheroni to that of spaghetti. Originating from Sicily, this dish has strong Middle Eastern and North African influences, acknowledging these two regions' involvement in Sicilian history. Serano shows us how to make even the most basic pasta dough into a variety of shapes and stunning designs using stripes, spots and delicate herbs. Even those who are already great pasta enthusiasts will be amazed at the range of pasta explored in this book, with dishes selected to delight not only with their exquisite taste but also by their beautiful and varied appearance. From the 'Polenta Gnocchi' of the Aosta Valley to Tuscany's 'Pancake Pasta', A Passion for Pasta has a dish for every occasion, and all tastes.

Meathooked

Marta Zaraska
Authors:
Marta Zaraska

One of the great science and health revelations of our time is the danger posed by meat-eating. Every day, it seems, we are warned about the harm producing and consuming meat can do to the environment and our bodies. Many of us have tried to limit how much meat we consume, and many of us have tried to give it up altogether. But it is not easy to resist the smoky, cured, barbequed, and fried delights that tempt us. What makes us crave animal protein, and what makes it so hard to give up? And if consuming meat is truly unhealthy for human beings, why didn't evolution turn us all into vegetarians in the first place? In Meathooked , science writer Marta Zaraska explores what she calls the meat puzzle": our love of meat, despite its harmful effects. Zaraska takes us on a witty tour of meat cultures around the word, stopping in India's unusual steakhouses, animal sacrifices at temples in Benin, and labs in the Netherlands that grow meat in petri dishes. From the power of evolution to the influence of the meat lobby, and from our genetic makeup to the traditions of our foremothers, she reveals the interplay of forces that keep us hooked on animal protein.A book for everyone from the diehard carnivore to the committed vegan, Meathooked illuminates one of the most enduring features of human civilization, ultimately shedding light on why meat-eating will continue to shape our bodies, and our world, into the foreseeable future.

The Tastemakers

David Sax
Authors:
David Sax

Tastemaker, n. Anyone with the power to make you eat quinoa.Kale. Spicy sriracha sauce. Honeycrisp apples. Cupcakes. These days, it seems we are constantly discovering a new food that will make us healthier, happier, or even somehow cooler. Chia seeds, after a brief life as a novelty houseplant and I Love the '80s punchline, are suddenly a superfood. Not long ago, that same distinction was held by pomegranate seeds, açai berries, and the fermented drink known as kombucha. So what happened? Did these foods suddenly cease to be healthy a few years ago? And by the way, what exactly is a superfood" again? In this eye-opening, witty work of reportage, David Sax uncovers the world of food trends: Where they come from, how they grow, and where they end up. Traveling from the South Carolina rice plot of America's premier grain guru to Chicago's gluttonous Baconfest, Sax reveals a world of influence, money, and activism that helps decide what goes on your plate. On his journey, he meets entrepreneurs, chefs, and even data analysts who have made food trends a mission and a business. The Tastemakers is full of entertaining stories and surprising truths about what we eat, how we eat it, and why.

The Lagasse Girls' Big Flavor, Bold Taste--and No Gluten!

Jessie Lagasse Swanson, Jilly Lagasse
Authors:
Jessie Lagasse Swanson, Jilly Lagasse

When you have to give up gluten, either for yourself or a family member, you may think you have to say good-bye to all of the comforting foods you love. It's hard enough adopting a new way of eating, but the idea of giving up your favourite fried chicken, mac'n' cheese, or oatmeal raisin cookies is downright unfair and intimidating (and if your kids are the ones diagnosed, it can be even more difficult!). It's a story Jilly and Jessie Lagasse know well. With a father famous for his bold Creole cuisine, Jilly and Jessie grew up loving rich foods full of big flavor. When they learned they both had to eliminate gluten, the Lagasse girls made it their mission to demonstrate that "gluten-free" doesn't have to mean "flavor-free." After years of gluten-free eating and experimentation, they're here to help you re-create classic recipes and all-time favourites made without gluten, without sacrificing any of the signature flavors that make them so irresistible.Using everyday ingredients you can find at most grocery stores, Jilly and Jessie share recipes for breakfasts, lunches (including hearty salads and soups), appetizers, mains, and, of course, scrumptious desserts. With dairy-free and quick-and-easy options as well, Jilly and Jessie make gluten-free eating simple and extraordinarily delicious, whether you're cooking for one or two, hosting a family get-together, or feeding the whole Little League team.
