The breathtaking new novel from the bestselling author of The Russian Concubine and The White Pearl. An epic story of love, loss and danger in paradise . . .

With beautiful blue skies, sandy beaches and glorious sunshine, the Bahamas is a slice of heaven. But in 1943, the world is at war and even paradise isn't safe . . .

Twenty-three-year-old Dodie Wyatt thought she had escaped her turbulent past - but one night her peace is shattered when she chooses to help a man she finds stabbed in an alleyway.

On the other side of Nassau, wealthy diplomat's wife Ella Stanford plays the role she has been born into, throwing herself into charitable work and charming her husband's powerful friends. But she has secrets to keep - and those secrets could put her life in danger.

When one of the richest men in the world is found dead, these two very different women - Dodie, a shy introvert, and Ella, a confident socialite - are drawn together. With the unstable island spiralling into violence, deceit, greed and death, Dodie and Ella have only each other to rely on, as their lives are torn apart . . .

A Risk Worth Taking

Life has not turned out the way that Dan Porter had planned. He thought that when he married Jackie twenty-five years before, he would be providing for her and their family until he could retire to a small house on the Devon coast and sit with a smug smile on his face, knowing that he had not only done his bit to perpetuate the human race, but had achieved it with distinction. But life doesn't always turn out the way you imagine it will. Firstly, Jackie's little job turned into a high-powered executive position with a top fashion house which required most of her time and attention, leaving only a sliver of a moment for her parenting and home-making duties. Secondly, that he would suffer an out-of-character brainstorm, leave his safe job and start up a business on his own - but customers had not come rushing to his door. Dan becomes a house husband - and most of his time is spent studying his empty email inbox. Approaching fifty and having read a magazine article, he thinks of a new brainwave - to upsticks from London, buy a croft in Scotland and take over a mail order business with Jackie. The family are not amused...

Swimming To Ithaca

Simon Mawer
Authors:

On her deathbed, Dee Denham, at one time the toast of colonial Cyprus, tells her son Thomas that her illness is a punishment. Compelled by grief and a confused childhood memory of betrayal, Thomas finds himself searching for the meaning of her last words. He searches through faded photographs and love letters, seeks out survivors and examines his own imperfect recollections. A vanished world comes to life: the restless, seductive island of Cyprus at the end of Empire, a place of oleander and carob trees, cocktails at the Harbour Club and adultery in shuttered bedrooms, peopled by ghostly admirers and conspirators, lovers and spies. Dee's story, an intimate history of violence and tenderness for which Thomas finds himself quite unprepared, gathers momentum, against, in the background, the ominous roar of approaching disaster.A vivid evocation of the past and a deft examination of the dangerous power of memory, SWIMMING TO ITHACA sets fragile human relationships against the unstoppable force of history and sheds new light on both.
