Proof of Heaven

A Neurosurgeon's Journey into the Afterlife

By Eben Alexander

  • Paperback
  • £13.99

The life-changing near-death experience of a respected neurosurgeon.

THE #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLING ACCOUNT OF A NEUROSURGEON'S OWN NEAR-DEATH EXPERIENCE.

Internationally acclaimed neurosurgeon Dr Eben Alexander always considered himself a man of science. His unwavering belief in evidence-based medicine fuelled a career in the top medical institutions of the world. But all this was set to change.

One morning in 2008 he fell into a coma after suffering a rare form of bacterial meningitis. Scans of his brain revealed massive damage. Death was deemed the most likely outcome. As his family prepared themselves for the worst, something miraculous happened. Dr Alexander's brain went from near total inactivity to awakening. He made a full recovery but he was never the same. He woke certain of the infinite reach of the soul, he was certain of a life beyond death.

In this astonishing book, Dr Alexander shares his experience, pieced together from the notes he made as soon as he was able to write again. Unlike other accounts of near-death experiences, he is able to explain in depth why his brain was incapable of fabricating the journey he experienced. His story is one of profound beauty and inspiration.

Biographical Notes

Dr Eben Alexander is known worldwide for his work in developing advanced neurosurgical technologies for complex disorders of the brain. He was educated at Duke Medical School and has worked at Duke University Medical School and Harvard Medical School. During his 15 years at Harvard and subsequent institutions, he authored and co-authored more than 150 chapters and peer-reviewed papers in neurosurgery. He is a member of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, the American Academy of Neurological Surgery and numerous other neurosurgical organisations.

Dr Eben Alexander's near-death experience is the most astounding I have heard in more than four decades of studying this phenomenon. In my opinion, Dr Alexander is living proof of an afterlife. — Dr Raymond Moody, bestselling author of Life After Life
Dr Alexander's neuroscience career taught him that near-death experiences are brain-based illusions, and yet his personal experience left him dumbstruck. His honest struggle to make sense of this unforgettable journey is a gripping story, unique in the literature of spiritual experiences that may well change how we understand our role in the universe. — Dr Bruce Greyson, Carlson Professor of Psychiatry and Neurobehavioral Sciences, University of Virginia School of Medicine; co-editor of The Handbook of Near-Death Experiences
An interesting account of how a man's spiritual beliefs were fundamentally changed by an unforeseen and nearly fatal event — Glasgow Herald
I don't know whether Heaven exists, but I do believe that Eben's account is real and that he witnessed a part of the Universe that most of us haven't seen — Anthony Peake, author of Is There Life After Death?: The Extraordinary Science of What Happens When We Die and Making Sense of Near Death Experiences
A man of science coming out for life after death has extra resonance, rather like Richard Dawkins saying 'God bless.' Based on his own life experience after falling into a coma, it's a fascinating read whatever your own opinions — Belfast Telegraph

The Nonsense Factory

Bruce Cannon Gibney
Authors:
Bruce Cannon Gibney

Does the American legal system work as advertised? Does it even work at all?News about abusive police, rotting prisons, and Congressional corruption all point to deep problems. In THE NONSENSE FACTORY, Bruce Cannon Gibney shows that these defects are not aberrations, but the product of the legal system's ceaseless, heedless growth. The whole factory of the law--legislation, enforcement, judgment, and corrections--has become so ambitious, yet so ignorant, that it cannot help but produce endless problems. The law sprawls into unknowable chaos, and citizens find themselves tangled in a web of obligations they cannot possibly honor, and victims for the unscrupulous to easily exploit. We see this playing out daily in Donald Trump's America. The legal crisis has become urgent. America is rapidly arriving at the point where no one can understand what law actually is or should do. The result is a system at war with itself, mutually distrustful and hostile in the extreme. The system can be salvaged; indeed, it must be. The risks of inaction are immense--the very stability of our country.

The Incurable Romantic

Frank Tallis
Authors:
Frank Tallis

'Frank Tallis brings a lifetime's clinical experience and wise reflection to a condition that, by its own strange routes, leads us into the very heart of love itself. This is a brilliant, compelling book' Ian McEwanLove defines us. It shapes the individual, ensures the preservation of the species, and is the principal subject we - as a culture - choose to examine in our art forms. The experience of being in love is powerful and it inevitably changes how we feel and how we behave. Even when love is normal it is so intense that for thousands of years doctors and poets have described love as a kind of madness; however, love can also go wrong. When this happens the consequences for the individual and those around them can be far reaching and in some instances truly astonishing. Lovesickness is not a trivial matter. Unrequited love is a frequent cause of suicide (particularly among the young) and over ten percent of murders are connected with sexual jealousy. In the course of his career, Frank Tallis has treated many fascinating patients, and their stories, told here, are dramatic, bizarre and revealing. From flagship NHS hospitals to luxury apartments, as well as notorious council estates Tallis has treated aristocrats, billionaires, film stars, middle managers and people in unspeakable poverty. The jilted Lord is just as vulnerable to the maladies of love as the jilted bus driver.Love is a great leveller. Everyone wants love, everyone falls in love, everyone loses love, and everyone knows something of love's madness. And when love goes wrong, wealth, education and status count for nothing. In this astonishing, honest book, we learn of love's myriad maladies, and witness first-hand the ways they can drive us to madness.

Heavens on Earth

Michael Shermer
Authors:
Michael Shermer

A scientific exploration into humanity's obsession with the afterlife and the quest for immortality from the bestselling author and sceptic Michael ShermerIn his most ambitious work yet, Shermer sets out to discover what drives humans' belief in life after death. For millennia, the awareness of our own mortality and failings has led to religions concocting comforting notions of an afterlife, of heaven and hell, utopias and dystopias, and of the perfectibility of human nature.Heavens on Earth explores the numerous manifestations of the afterlife - a place where souls might go after the death of the physical body. Religious leaders have toiled to make sense of this place that a surprisingly high percentage of people believe exists, but from which no one has ever returned to report what it is really like. This is one of the most profound questions of the human condition and has long driven philosophers and theologians to try to understand the meaning and purpose of life for mortal beings, and how we can transcend mortality. Shermer details recent scientific attempts to achieve immortality by radical life extentionists, extropians, transhumanists, cryonicists and mind-uploaders, along with utopians who have attempted to create heaven on earth. Heavens on Earth concludes with an uplifting paean to purpose and progress and what we can do in the here-and-now, whether or not there is a hereafter.

The Boy Who Was Raised as a Dog, 3rd Edition

Bruce D. Perry, Maia Szalavitz
Authors:
Bruce D. Perry, Maia Szalavitz

What happens when a young child is traumatized? How does terror affect a child's mind-and how can that mind recover? Child psychiatrist Bruce Perry has treated children faced with unimaginable horror: homicide survivors, witnesses to their own parents' murders, children raised in closets and cages, the Branch Davidian children, and victims of extreme neglect and family violence. In The Boy Who Was Raised as a Dog, Dr. Perry tells their stories of trauma and transformation. He explains what happens to the brain when children are exposed to extreme stress and trauma and reveals his innovative (non-medicinal) methods for helping to ease their pain and allowing them to become healthy adults. In this deeply informed and moving book, Perry shares with the reader the lessons of courage, humanity and hope he learned from these scarred children. He dramatically demonstrates that only when we understand the science of the mind and the power of love and nurturing, can we hope to heal the spirit of even the most wounded child.

Fulfilled

Anna Yusim
Authors:
Anna Yusim

Over the past 15 years, psychiatrist Dr. Anna Yusim has made a startling discovery that flies in the face of most modern medical teaching, including her own. Her patients' primary complaints, ranging from anxiety to depression to sexual dysfunction, often coincide with spiritual neglect--an all too common problem in Western cultures that champion intellectual development over spiritual care. Medical research is now substantiating what Dr. Yusim has known to be true for many years: spirituality is a powerful path to healing. Drawing from the best in Western medicine (and her training at Stanford, Yale, and NYU), as well as teachings from Kabbalah, Buddhism, and South African shamanistic traditions, Dr. Yusim has developed a program that marries empirical science and spirituality for true healing. Using the techniques Dr. Yusim has used to help over 1,000 individuals realign with their higher purpose--authenticity, empowerment, meaning, and connection--FULFILLED tunes readers in to the voice of their soul and teaches them how to live happier, more fulfilling lives. Filled with practical wisdom, interactive exercises, and fascinating research, and integrating the best of Western medicine with Eastern philosophy, FULFILLED will appeal to skeptics and seekers alike, and to readers who are looking for more meaning, joy, and happiness in their lives.

The Weekend Effect

Katrina Onstad
Authors:
Katrina Onstad

'A powerful argument, and practical advice, on the importance of reclaiming your leisure time to live a happier and more fulfilling life' Gretchen Rubin, New York Times bestselling author of Better Than Before and The Happiness ProjectYears ago Katrina Onstad was an au pair in France. Every Sunday, as best as she could tell, France shut down. No one worked; no one shopped for groceries, or did any kind of shopping. It felt like a ritual, sacred and culturally protected. Now, her weekends are more like a laundry list of to-do items dashed off between hockey training, doing actual laundry, checking emails, working on an assignment, and on and on. She began to do research to see if she was alone in feeling like weekends are almost non-existent anymore. As she dug further, she realized that this feeling was almost universal. Filled with rich research and stories, as well as her own struggles, Katrina takes us through the negative impact that losing our downtime has on all areas of our lives. She'll show us how some people and companies are already taking steps to eliminate the relentless 7-day-a-week availability that modern work life seems to require. Not anti-technology, rather this is about a return to the ritual of weekend.

Lab Girl

Hope Jahren
Authors:
Hope Jahren

Lab Girl is a book about work and about love, and the mountains that can be moved when those two things come together. It is told through Jahren's remarkable stories: about the discoveries she has made in her lab, as well as her struggle to get there; about her childhood playing in her father's laboratory; about how lab work became a sanctuary for both her heart and her hands; about Bill, the brilliant, wounded man who became her loyal colleague and best friend; about their field trips - sometimes authorised, sometimes very much not - that took them from the Midwest across the USA, to Norway and to Ireland, from the pale skies of North Pole to tropical Hawaii; and about her constant striving to do and be her best, and her unswerving dedication to her life's work.Visceral, intimate, gloriously candid and sometimes extremely funny, Jahren's descriptions of her work, her intense relationship with the plants, seeds and soil she studies, and her insights on nature enliven every page of this thrilling book. In Lab Girl, we see anew the complicated power of the natural world, and the power that can come from facing with bravery and conviction the challenge of discovering who you are.
