Women with Money

Jean Chatzky
Authors:
Jean Chatzky

Ask successful women what they want from their money and they'll tell you: independence, security, choices, a better world, and-oh yes-way less stress, not just for themselves but for their kids, spouses, partners, parents, and friends. Through a series of Happy Hour discussions (when money is the topic, wine helps) and one-on-one conversations, Jean Chatzky gets women to open up about the one topic we still never talk about. Then she flips the script and charts a pathway to this joyful, purpose-filled life that today's women not only want but also, finally, have the resources to afford. Chatzky's candid three-part plan-formed through detailed reporting with the world's top economists, psychiatrists, behaviorists, financial planners, and attorneys, as well as her own two decades of experience in the field-involves helping women understand themselves in relation to money. Readers will wrap their hands around tactical solutions to get paid what they deserve, become inspired to start businesses, invest for tomorrow, make their money last, and then use that money to foster secure relationships, raise independent and confident children, send those kids to college, care for their aging parents, leave a legacy, and-best of all-bring them joy!

The Rise Of The Virtual State

Richard Rosecrance
Authors:
Richard Rosecrance

What will power look like in the century to come? "Imperial Great Britain may have been the model for the nineteenth century," Richard Rosecrance writes, "but Hong Kong will be the model for the twenty-first." We are entering the Age of the Virtual State - when land and its products are no longer the primary source of power, when managing flows is more important than maintaining stockpiles, when service industries are the greatest source of wealth and expertise and creativity are the greatest natural resources.Rosecrance's brilliant new book combines international relations theory with economics and the business model of the virtual corporation to describe how virtual states arise and operate, and how traditional powers will relate to them. In specific detail, he shows why Japan's kereitsu system, which brought it industrial dominance, is doomed why Hong Kong and Taiwan will influence China more than vice-versa and why the European Union will command the most international prestige even though the U.S. may produce more wealth.

Spoiled Rotten

Arthur Fleisher, Brian Goff, Fleischer Goff
Authors:
Arthur Fleisher, Brian Goff, Fleischer Goff

According to commonly repeated reports, wages and personal incomes have stagnated in the U.S. over the last twenty-five years for average Americans. A corollary argument asserts that the combination of flat living standards for the masses and rising standards for a privileged few have created a number of social ills. Spoiled Rotten presents a simple and contradictory argument: properly measured standards of material well-being have grown for practically all U.S. residents over the last twenty-five years, and this fantastic growth is responsible for a variety of negative social consequences. In developing their ideas about wealth and its influence, Goff and Fleisher look for grass-roots explanations. The problems the authors attribute to the growth in wealth include employment issues such as job selection and security, family issues such as illegitimacy and divorce, rising crime trends, educational issues such as sluggish SAT scores, and others. Further, the authors discuss how wealth has allowed Americans to create problems out of thin air, including many of the supposed environmental dangers, health care expenditures, and safety regulation.Given appropriate space are wealth's many beneficial contributions to social issues. These benefits lead into the authors' final analysis in the book: what to do about wealth's negative effects without destroying its positive impacts?

Myths Of Rich And Poor

Michael W. Cox, Richard Alm
Authors:
Michael W. Cox, Richard Alm

Popular wisdom holds that the years since 1973,the end of the postwar miracle",have been a time of economic decline and stagnation: lackluster productivity, falling real wages, and lost competitiveness. The rich have gotten richer, the poor have gotten poorer, and most of us have barely held on while watching all the best jobs disappear overseas. As Myths of Rich and Poor demonstrates, this picture is not just wrong, it's spectacularly wrong. The hard numbers, simple facts, and iconoclastic arguments of this book will change the way you think about the American economy.
