The Mumsition

Your friendly companion to the first year of motherhood

By The Creators of Mush

  • E-Book
  • £P.O.R.

A hilarious, realistic and useful guide to the first year of motherhood from the creators of Mush, the fastest growing social app for mums.

'Funny and relatable . . . Buy it as a present for a pregnant friend and she'll probably make you godmother' Pandora Sykes

'Making the transition to motherhood is a seminal moment in the life of a woman and this gutsy, informative - and very funny - guidebook is the ideal 'best friend' to navigate new terrain. I loved it.' Rosie Nixon, Editor-in-Chief, Hello!

So, you're a mum. Now what? It's easy to spend so long thinking about the birth (and packing and re-packing that hospital bag) that you forget what happens next: becoming a fully-fledged actual parent.

Introducing The Mumsition: basically your smartest, wittiest mum friend. It covers everything you'll go through in that crazy first year in a way that's useful and informative - but also funny, chatty and above all, real.

Becoming a mum (i.e. your mumsition) is one of the biggest things that you'll ever go through. That's why the milestones in this book aren't just about your baby smiling or walking or sleeping through the night for the first time, but everything YOU'RE going through too: the first time you manage to leave the house, the first time you get on a bus with your little one and the first time you have sex again.

The Mumsition is clued-up without being judgemental or patronising, funny without trying too hard and sympathetic and supportive without being saccharine. From the moment you go on maternity leave until your baby's first birthday, this book has got your back.

Biographical Notes

Mush is the fastest-growing social app for mums in the UK. Launched in April 2016 by Katie Massie-Taylor and Sarah Hesz, two London mums who met in the playground and became each other's lifelines during maternity leave, Mush has now become the most wide-reaching social app for mums in the UK and Australia. They have one mission: to make being a mum more sociable and fun.

Their editor Isabel Mohan has been part of Team Mush from the start and has shaped the content on the app in terms of tone of voice and range of content. Isabel started her career on Heat magazine 15 years ago, left after six years to launch The Daily Mirror's 3am gossip site before going freelance in 2012, writing on entertainment and women's lifestyle for The Telegraph and Grazia, amongst others.

Small Men on the Wrong Side of History

Ed West
Authors:
Ed West

Exploring why conservatives have lost almost every political argument since 1945, Ed West looks at this endless litany of failure from the perspective of one of the losers, in a semi-autobiographical, self-deprecating way.Since the 1950s the western world has gone through a huge cultural shift, comparable to the rise of Christianity during the late Roman period and the 16th century religious revolution unleashed by Martin Luther. Both of these led to profound changes in public ideas about morality and sexuality, and eventually to 'culture wars' between two deeply opposed groups. Today what we're witnessing is a sort of second Reformation, and that's why it's going to be long, painful and boring, and both sides are going to get more idiotic and hysterical, just as religious divisions once drove Catholics and Protestants into prolonged insanity.Conservatives, like the pagans and Catholics before them, are very much on the losing side. The future appears progressive and their defeat is inevitable, part of an 'arc of history' that leads irrevocably to a progressive utopia in which they're left in the dustbin. As Barack Obama said of al-Qaeda, another group of guys not entirely comfortable with the modern world, conservatives are 'Small Men on the Wrong Side of History'.Too many polemics and articles on the Right are tediously shouty, and too few of them explore where their arguments have fallen flat and why people find conservatives so repulsive. Small Men on the Wrong Side of History is aimed at being the rare conservative book that someone on the Left will enjoy.West will look at some of the idiocies of the modern Right and the strange characteristics shared by conservatives, including himself, but he will also offer explanations as to why people are conservative, and explain some of the benefits conservatism offers. In particular he argues it's now necessary as a break on 'runaway liberalism', the competitive desire to appear Woker Than Thou which is driving progressive politics to extremes, and which has provoked a reaction with figures like the psychologist Jordan Peterson and his legion of fans.

The Enchanted Hour

Meghan Cox Gurdon
Authors:
Meghan Cox Gurdon

'As soon as I began to read, I was filled with that kind of engrossed blossoming that happens somewhere inside of you when you start a really nourishing book.' - Pandora SykesA conversation-changing look at the social, familial, neurological, and psychological benefits of reading aloud, especially for parents and children. A miraculous alchemy occurs when one person reads to another, transforming the simple stuff of a book, a voice, and a bit of time into complex and powerful fuel for the heart, brain, and imagination. Grounded in the latest neuroscience and behavioural research, and drawing widely from literature, The Enchanted Hour explains the dazzling cognitive and social-emotional benefits that await children who are read to, whatever their class, nationality or family background. Meghan Cox Gurdon argues that this ancient practice is a fast-working antidote to the fractured attention spans, atomized families and unfulfilling ephemera of the tech era, helping to replenish what our devices are leaching away. For everyone, reading aloud engages the mind in complex narratives; for children, it's an irreplaceable gift that builds vocabulary, fosters imagination, and kindles a lifelong appreciation of language, stories and pictures.Bringing together the latest scientific research, practical tips, and reading recommendations, The Enchanted Hour will both charm and galvanize, inspiring readers to share this invaluable, life-altering tradition with the people they love most.
