The Mumsition

Your friendly companion to the first year of motherhood

By The Creators of Mush

  • E-Book
  • £P.O.R.

A hilarious, realistic and useful guide to the first year of motherhood from the creators of Mush, the fastest growing social app for mums.

'Funny and relatable . . . Buy it as a present for a pregnant friend and she'll probably make you godmother' Pandora Sykes

'Making the transition to motherhood is a seminal moment in the life of a woman and this gutsy, informative - and very funny - guidebook is the ideal 'best friend' to navigate new terrain. I loved it.' Rosie Nixon, Editor-in-Chief, Hello!

So, you're a mum. Now what? It's easy to spend so long thinking about the birth (and packing and re-packing that hospital bag) that you forget what happens next: becoming a fully-fledged actual parent.

Introducing The Mumsition: basically your smartest, wittiest mum friend. It covers everything you'll go through in that crazy first year in a way that's useful and informative - but also funny, chatty and above all, real.

Becoming a mum (i.e. your mumsition) is one of the biggest things that you'll ever go through. That's why the milestones in this book aren't just about your baby smiling or walking or sleeping through the night for the first time, but everything YOU'RE going through too: the first time you manage to leave the house, the first time you get on a bus with your little one and the first time you have sex again.

The Mumsition is clued-up without being judgemental or patronising, funny without trying too hard and sympathetic and supportive without being saccharine. From the moment you go on maternity leave until your baby's first birthday, this book has got your back.

Biographical Notes

Mush is the fastest-growing social app for mums in the UK. Launched in April 2016 by Katie Massie-Taylor and Sarah Hesz, two London mums who met in the playground and became each other's lifelines during maternity leave, Mush has now become the most wide-reaching social app for mums in the UK and Australia. They have one mission: to make being a mum more sociable and fun.

Their editor Isabel Mohan has been part of Team Mush from the start and has shaped the content on the app in terms of tone of voice and range of content. Isabel started her career on Heat magazine 15 years ago, left after six years to launch The Daily Mirror's 3am gossip site before going freelance in 2012, writing on entertainment and women's lifestyle for The Telegraph and Grazia, amongst others.

Three Men on a Diet

George Courtauld
Authors:
George Courtauld

Three Men on a Diet is the very funny and brutally honest story of three mighty men with nothing to gain and so much to lose: a diet book with a difference.Three Men on a Diet is the story of George, Reggie and Sebastian, three middle-aged friends and food- and drink-lovers, learning how to lower their calorie intake without losing their joie de vivre.Determined to improve his looks and health before it's too late (and after being told that he looked like a pregnant bulldog), Reggie persuades the others to join him on a five-month quest to shed three stone. Each has his own degree of cynicism, commitment and willingness to compromise on breakfast, parties and alcohol.Amidst the bewildering array of information on offer (what is a carb? What is saturated fat? How many units in a bottle of wine?), together they learn how to navigate stumbling blocks such as mayonnaise, chocolate and cheese, and support each other through fortnightly weigh-ins and varied levels of success with the Fast Diet, the Atkins Diet and others. At the very least, they hope to give up snoring and rekindle their love lives.Join the trio on their journey as they learn the truth about dieting. This hilarious and realistic guide rips up the rule books: it is an anti-diet book for those who enjoy the finer things in life.

Cats on Catnip

Andrew Marttila
Authors:
Andrew Marttila

Andrew Marttila has been a professional animal photographer for the past five years and most of that time has been dedicated to photographing cats exclusively. With his set-up he's able to capture wonderful split-second images of'cat's most abandoned expressions as they enjoy every cats favourite treat, catnip. Andrew rescues and raises orphan kittens with his partner Hannah Shaw (the internet's famous Kitten Lady), and many of the models were hand-raised by Andrew and Hannah from newborns. Catnip, or Nepeta cataria, grows wild in many parts of the world and is extremely easy to grow at home in most climates. It's part of the mint family and contained within the bulbs, stems, and leaves is an oil called nepetalactone. Once eaten, rolled on, or crushed, the oil binds to the cat's nasal receptors and stimulates a response that affects a number of areas in the brain, including the hypothalamus and amygdala, two regions that are key in regulating emotional and behavioral responses to stimuli. This produces a mild euphoric effect and typically lasts about ten to twenty minutes.Catnip is non-addictive and harmless and provides a temporary respite from your cat's gruelling workload of napping all day.

The Guilty Feminist

Deborah Frances-White
Authors:
Deborah Frances-White

In 2015 I described myself as 'guilty feminist' for the first time. My goals were noble but my concerns were trivial. I wanted desperately for women to be taken seriously in leadership roles all over the world, but I also wanted to look good sitting down naked.A funny, joyful, frank and inspiring book about embracing both feminism and our imperfections, from the creator of the hit comedy podcast, Deborah Frances-White.From inclusion to the secret power of rom coms, from effective activism to what poker can tell us about gender, Deborah Frances-White explores what it means to be a 21st-century feminist, and encourages us to make the world better for all women. The book also includes exclusive interviews with performers, activists and thinkers - Jessamyn Stanley, Zoe Coombs Marr, Susan Wokoma, Bisha K. Ali, Reubs Walsh, Becca Bunce, Amika George, Mo Mansfied and Leyla Hussein - plus a piece from Hannah Gadsby.

And Now We Have Everything

Meaghan O'Connell
Authors:
Meaghan O'Connell

Operating Instructions for the Millennial set: a fiercely honest account of becoming a mother before you're "ready."If you feel totally alienated by the cutesy, sanctimonious tone of the "motherhood industrial complex," this is the book for you. After getting accidentally pregnant in her twenties, Meaghan O'Connell realized that brutally honest, agenda-less resources on the emotional and existential impact of motherhood were nowhere to be found. In And Now We Have Everything, she offers a brave new perspective on the transition into motherhood. With her dark humor and a hair-trigger B.S. detector, Meaghan addresses the pervasive imposter syndrome that comes with unplanned pregnancy, the second adolescence of a changing postpartum body, the myth that giving birth is a "magical" experience, the problem of sex post-baby, the strange push to make 'mom friends', and the fascinating weirdness of stepping into a new, not-yet-comfortable identity. Addressing the fears and anxieties of Millennial women in an unflinchingly frank, funny, and visceral way, Meaghan fills a void in the discussion on motherhood, identity, what it means to be ready.

The Postnatal Depletion Cure

Dr Oscar Serrallach
Authors:
Dr Oscar Serrallach

It's all too common to hear new mums talk about 'baby brain' and extreme fatigue. But what if it wasn't the physical toll of giving birth, breastfeeding or chasing a toddler that was sapping your strength? What it if was something deeper? Dr. Oscar Serallach has spent his medical career witnessing women fail hormonally, nutritionally and emotionally to get back on their feet after having a baby. The true cause? A syndrome he calls postnatal depletion. THE POSTNATAL DEPLETION CURE is the first book to name the syndrome and to offer a practical programme to help mothers replenish their bodies after having a baby. The book includes a comprehensive guide to the nutrients women need to enhance organ function and balance hormones, along with advice on how to maintain a healthy diet and exercise routine and get necessary rest, despite the demands of motherhood. Filled with prescriptive takeaways and many success stories, THE POSTNATAL DEPLETION CURE will help mothers be the best they can be physically and emotionally.

Splash!

Stephen Glover
Authors:
Stephen Glover

'I thoroughly enjoyed Splash! It's a delicious confection of excellent plotting, an inventively bonkers cast of characters, subtle insights into the world of newspapers and a satisfying ending which invokes the great Evelyn Waugh's masterpiece, Scoop. A fine comedy of manners by a writer who knows the media inside out' BEL MOONEYSam Blunt is a drunken, broken-down tabloid reporter, working for a once-mighty newspaper struggling to come to terms with the digital age. With the assistance of Benedict, an earnest though clever wet-behind-the-ears young intern on the paper, Sam grapples to uncover the story of the century which reveals the political corruption and cynicism at the heart of a rotten Establishment. As they try to nail the story amid a series of capers, Sam and Benedict are frustrated by the self-serving proprietor of the Daily Bugle, various self-appointed do-gooders who want to rein in the Press, and Trevor Yapp, the malign and untrustworthy editor of Bugle Online. Splash! is a satire of the Press and politics in a modern London peopled by a Chinese billionaire would-be press proprietor, a worldly bishop, neglected immigrants, a corrupt and plaintive Prime Minister, and journalists who are often most interested in doing one another down.Yet however self-serving newspapers may sometimes be, Sam and Benedict are ultimately on the side of the angels as they battle to write their triumphant story.
