Good Profit

How Creating Value for Others Built One of the World’s Most Successful Companies

By Charles G. Koch

  • E-Book
  • £P.O.R.

The revolutionary market-based management system behind one of the most successful companies of our time

A NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

In 1961, Charles Koch joined his father's Wichita-based company, then valued at $21 million. Six years later, following his father's death, he was named chairman of the board and CEO of Koch Industries, Inc. Today, Koch Industries' estimated worth is $100 billion - making it one of the largest private companies in the world. Koch exceeds the S&P 500's five-decade growth by 27-fold, and plans to double its value on average every six years.

What exactly does this company do and why is it so remarkably profitable? While you won't find the Koch name on your stain-resistant carpet, stretch denim jeans, the connectors in your smartphone or your baby's ultra-absorbent diapers, Charles Koch's Market-Based Management® system, intended to generate good profit, drove these innovations and many more.

Good profit results from products and services that customers vote for freely with their money; products that help improve people's lives. It results from a culture where employees are empowered to act entrepreneurially to discover customer preferences and the best ways to satisfy them. Good profit is the earnings that follow when long-term value is created for everyone - customers, employees, shareholders and society. Readers will learn to:

· Craft a vision for how a business can thrive in spite of disruption and ever-changing consumer values
· Find and retain a workforce possessing both virtue and talent (the first being the more important)
· Award employees with ownership and decision rights based on their comparative advantages and proven contributions, rather than job title
· Motivate all employees to maximise their contributions with effectively structured incentives so employees' compensation is limited only by the value they create - not budgets or company-wide policy

A must-read for any leader, entrepreneur or student, as well as those who want a more civil, fair and prosperous society, GOOD PROFIT is destined to rank as one of the greatest management books of all time.

Biographical Notes

Koch has continuously supported academic and public policy research (including many Nobel Prize winners) for more than 50 years, and has helped build a number of organisations focused on research, policy and education to advance the understanding of the free society.

The Sheep Stell

Janet White
Authors:
Janet White

'Every animal needs its own territory and humans are no exception. My plans were clear at an early age. I intended to live somewhere wild and supremely beautiful . . . I imagined searching the whole world for a place, high and remote as a sheep stell, quiet as a monastery, challenging and virginal, untouched and unknown.'Over twenty years ago, well before the current trend for nature writing, Janet White wrote The Sheep Stell, a beautiful and evocative memoir about her life as a shepherdess.Throughout her life Janet has always tended sheep - first as a young woman in the Cheviot Hills, where she was treated with bewilderment by the other shepherds, before leaving Britain to live on an uninhabited island off the coast of New Zealand with a bonfire as her only means of communication with the mainland and only her flock of 200 sheep for company. After a brutal attack by an obsessed young man bent on her destruction, she was forced to leave her beloved island and return to England, where she married, became a smallholder in Sussex and finally bought a hill farm in Somerset where she still lives today. Her memoir tells the tale of a woman before her time, with incredible courage and determination, and wanting only peace and solitude in nature and a life with animals. Underpinning The Sheep Stell is Janet's devotion to the land and her total commitment to combining the principles of conservation with successful farming.Janet White is a trailblazer, both in her life and work. The Sheep Stell is testament to that and homage to the nature we're so rapidly losing touch with. It is a true celebration of the pastoral and pure escapism to a simpler life.'This is a strange and lovely book, and quiet as it is, it makes you gasp at the profoundly lived quality of the life it so modestly describes' Jenny Diski'A hymn to country solitude, lyrical, unpretentious and deeply felt' Colin Thubron

Quentin Letts

From the Sunday Times bestselling author of 50 People Who Buggered Up Britain, Quentin Letts, comes his blistering new book on how Britain's out-of-touch, illiberal elite fills its boots.'HILARIOUS' Daily Mail'With its vicious takedowns, Quentin Letts' laugh-out-loud Patronising Bastards will have the lefty-elite running scared' The SunNot since Marie Antoinette said 'Let them eat cake' have the peasants been so revolting. Western capitalism's elites are bemused: Brexit, Trump, and maybe more eruptions to follow. But their rulers were so good to them! Wigged judges stared down their legalistic noses at a surging, pongy populous. These people who know best, these snooterati with their faux-liberal ways, are the 'Patronising Bastards'. Messy

Tim Harford
Authors:
Tim Harford

The urge to tidiness seems to be rooted deep in the human psyche. Many of us feel threatened by anything that is vague, unplanned, scattered around or hard to describe. We find comfort in having a script to rely on, a system to follow, in being able to categorise and file away.We all benefit from tidy organisation - up to a point. A large library needs a reference system. Global trade needs the shipping container. Scientific collaboration needs measurement units. But the forces of tidiness have marched too far. Corporate middle managers and government bureaucrats have long tended to insist that everything must have a label, a number and a logical place in a logical system. Now that they are armed with computers and serial numbers, there is little to hold this tidy-mindedness in check. It's even spilling into our personal lives, as we corral our children into sanitised play areas or entrust our quest for love to the soulless algorithms of dating websites. Order is imposed when chaos would be more productive. Or if not chaos, then . . . messiness. The trouble with tidiness is that, in excess, it becomes rigid, fragile and sterile. In Messy, Tim Harford reveals how qualities we value more than ever - responsiveness, resilience and creativity - simply cannot be disentangled from the messy soil that produces them. This, then, is a book about the benefits of being messy: messy in our private lives; messy in the office, with piles of paper on the desk and unread spreadsheets; messy in the recording studio, the laboratory or in preparing for an important presentation; and messy in our approach to business, politics and economics, leaving things vague, diverse and uncomfortably made-up-on-the-spot. It's time to rediscover the benefits of a little mess.
