If so, The Book of Leadership is for you.

Over the last six years, Anthony Gell has conducted interviews with some of the most successful CEOs, entrepreneurs and business thinkers in the world, including Sir Terry Leahy, former CEO of Tesco, Richard Reed, founder of innocent drinks, Olaf Swantee, CEO of EE and Daniel Goleman, author of the bestselling Emotional Intelligence.

In The Book of Leadership he combines his own experiences as a CEO with those of the leaders he has interviewed to provide insights and advice in three core areas:

* Part 1 looks at leaders as individuals and reveals the personal habits and attributes that have laid the foundations for their success.
* Part 2 focuses on what it takes to build and motivate a world class team
* Part 3 goes beyond team leadership to identify how the habits of effective leadership are carried through on a larger scale in organisations.

Alpha Girls

Julian Guthrie
Authors:
Julian Guthrie

'Alpha Girls will be a story to make you laugh and cry. It will inspire and infuriate you. It will be a must-read for women of all ages.' - Arianna HuffingtonFor all its trailblazing, world-shaping innovation, Silicon Valley has long been a mysterious, male-dominated world and, at its worst, a toxic environment in which to be a woman. Recent exposés have revealed sexist 'bro-cultures' at top tech companies, ranging from sexual harassment lawsuits in which women are routinely excluded from all-male ski trips to the partner at a leading VC firm who, when asked by a reporter whether there were talented females candidates on the job market, replied 'we're not prepared to lower our standards.'How is it possible that a community with such forward-looking technology, could take such a backward approach to gender relations?Alpha Girls dives into this enigmatic world, going behind the scenes at Facebook, Microsoft, McAfee, Google, Tesla and more to reveal the history of Silicon Valley from the point of view of the women who have witnessed and participated in its rise to global domination of the business landscape. Julian Guthrie focuses on a small group of self-made women who, outnumbered and underestimated, helped launch the modern computer industry, and are today renowned figures in the VC world of the Valley. Alpha Girls is an inspiring, groundbreaking, true story about women taking enormous risks, playing by the men's rules, juggling work and family, all the while refusing to be limited by the expectations of others. These alpha girls - as well as men in the industry - have granted Julian incredible, unprecedented access to an otherwise closed community.

The Big Nine

Amy Webb
Authors:
Amy Webb

We like to think that we are in control of the future of "artificial" intelligence. The reality, though, is that we--the everyday people whose data powers AI--aren't actually in control of anything. When, for example, we speak with Alexa, we contribute that data to a system we can't see and have no input into--one largely free from regulation or oversight. The big nine corporations--Amazon, Google, Facebook, Tencent, Baidu, Alibaba, Microsoft, IBM and Apple--are the new gods of AI and are short-changing our futures to reap immediate financial gain. In this book, Amy Webb reveals the pervasive, invisible ways in which the foundations of AI--the people working on the system, their motivations, the technology itself--are broken. Within our lifetimes, AI will, by design, begin to behave unpredictably, thinking and acting in ways which defy human logic. The big nine corporations may be inadvertently building and enabling vast arrays of intelligent systems that don't share our motivations, desires, or hopes for the future of humanity.Much more than a passionate, human-centered call-to-arms, this book delivers a strategy for changing course, and provides a path for liberating us from algorithmic decision-makers and powerful corporations.

Christine Lagorio-Chafkin

'Fast-paced, packed with insight, and, above all, wonderfully entertaining, this is a must read for anyone hoping to make sense of the century ahead.' -- Ashlee Vance, bestselling author of Elon Musk 'A gripping read, and it's full of lessons for building startups and organizing communities.' -- Adam Grant, bestselling author of Originals, Give and Take, and Option B with Sheryl SandbergReddit hails itself as 'the front page of the Internet'. It's the sixth most-visited website in the world -- and yet, millions have no idea what it is. They should be paying attention. We Are the Nerds takes readers inside this captivating, maddening enterprise, whose army of obsessed users have been credited with everything from solving crimes and spurring millions in charitable donations to seeding alt-right fury and even landing Donald Trump in the White House. Reddit has become a mirror of the Internet itself: It has dark trenches, shiny memes, malicious trolls, and a heart-warming ability to connect people across cultures, oceans, and ideological divides. This is the gripping story of how Reddit's founders, Steve Huffman and Alexis Ohanian, transformed themselves from student video-gamers into Silicon Valley millionaires as they turned their creation into an icon of the digital age. But the journey was often fraught. Reporting on Reddit for more than six years, conducting hundreds of interviews and gaining exclusive access to its founders, Christine Lagorio-Chafkin has written the definitive account of the birth and life of Reddit. Packed with revelatory details about its biggest triumphs and controversies, this inside look at Reddit includes fresh insights on the relationship between Huffman and Ohanian, staff turmoil, the tragic life of Aaron Swartz, and Reddit's struggle to become profitable. In a time when we are increasingly concerned about privacy and manipulation on social platforms, We Are the Nerds reveals Reddit's central role in the dissemination of culture and information in history's first fully digital century. Rigorously reported and highly entertaining, We Are the Nerds explores how this unique platform has changed the way we all communicate today. Get Out of Your Own Way

Alan Hester
Authors:
Alan Hester

Alan Hester's insightful statement will ring bells with many people. So many of us will regularly and repeatedly stop ourselves from doing what we most want to do. We will get in our own way. We may compare ourselves with more successful people and look for unfair advantages that they have and we don't. We may bemoan our luck or be plagued by any number of common conditions, such as starting something and not finishing it, making bad decisions or no decision at all. We may lack self-belief and think we don't deserve success, that we may be ridiculed or judged, that there is no point in even trying, or feel uncomfortable trying. These are just a few of the ways in which, through fear, ego and lack of confidence, we get in our own way. The author's argument is that although we may not be able to control certain events in our life, we can control our response to those events, and thereby decide the outcome. He has written this book so we can learn how to get out of our own way and become our own best adviser, motivator and friend.

Leap

Howard Yu
Authors:
Howard Yu

In a book of narrative history and practical strategy, IMD professor of management and innovation Howard Yu shows that succeeding in today's marketplace is no longer just a matter of mastering copycat tactics, companies also need to leap across knowledge disciplines, and to reimagine how a product is made or a service is delivered. This proven tactic can protect a company from being overtaken by new (and often foreign) copycat competitors.Using riveting case studies of successful leaps and tragic falls, Yu illustrates five principles to success that span a wide range of industries, countries, and eras. Learn about how P&G in the 19th century made the leap from handcrafted soaps and candles to mass production of its signature brand Ivory, leaped into the new fields of consumer psychology and advertising, then leaped again, at the risk of cannibalizing its core product, into synthetic detergents and won with Tide in 1946. Learn about how Novartis and other pharma pioneers stayed ahead by making leaps from chemistry to microbiology to genomics in drug discovery; and how forward-thinking companies, including China's largest social media app--WeChat, Tokyo-based Internet service provider Recruit Holdings, and Illinois-headquartered John Deere are leaping ahead by leveraging the emergence of ubiquitous connectivity, the inexorable rise of intelligent machines, and the rising importance of managerial creativity.Outlasting competition is difficult; doing so over decades or a century is nearly impossible--unless one leaps. Ultimately, Leap is a manifesto for how pioneering companies can endure and prosper in a world of constant change and inevitable copycats.

Alison Green

'Ask A Manager is the book I wish I'd had in my desk drawer when I was starting out (or even, let's be honest, fifteen years in).' - Sarah Knight, New York Times bestselling author of The Life-Changing Magic of Not Giving a F*ck and Get Your Sh*t Together'I am a HUGE fan of Alison Green's "Ask a Manager" column. In this witty and practical guide, Green tackles 200 of those delicate discussions that you need to have, but might not be sure how to begin - and arms you with the wording to do it.
