By Muriel Spark

  • Paperback
  • £5.99

Celebrate Muriel Spark's hundredth birthday by imbibing a delicious glass of her bubbly wit in this brilliant, wry collection of her wise words.

The Observing Eye is a collection of Muriel Spark's brilliant asides, sayings, and aphorisms. No other writer can hold a candle to her wry, puckish observations:

'Neurotics are awfully quick to notice other people's mentalities.'
'It is impossible to persuade a man who does not disagree, but smiles.'
'The sacrifice of pleasure is of course itself a pleasure.'
'Be on the alert to recognize your prime at whatever time in your life it may occur.'
'Ridicule is the only honourable weapon we have left.'

Spark's striking insights are precise and unforgettable - they will make you laugh and nod in agreement, with a wicked smile on your face. Her wise words never fail to hit exactly the right note.

I loved it.' Rosie Nixon, Editor-in-Chief, Hello! So, you're a mum. Now what? That's why the milestones in this book aren't just about your baby smiling or walking or sleeping through the night for the first time, but everything YOU'RE going through too: the first time you manage to leave the house, the first time you get on a bus with your little one and the first time you have sex again. The Mumsition is clued-up without being judgemental or patronising, funny without trying too hard and sympathetic and supportive without being saccharine. The Magic Toyshop

Angela Carter
Authors:
Angela Carter

Cover design by Jacqueline Groag'This crazy world whirled about her, men and women dwarfed by toys and puppets, where even the birds were mechanical and the few human figures went masked . . . She was in the night again, and the doll was herself'One night Melanie walks through the garden in her mother's wedding dress. The next morning her world is shattered. Forced to leave her rural home, she is sent to London to live with relatives she has never met: gentle Aunt Margaret, mute since her wedding day; and her brothers, Francie, whose graceful music belies his clumsy nature, and the volatile Finn. Brooding over all is Uncle Philip, who loves only the puppets he creates in his workshop, which are life-sized - and uncannily life-like.
