The people, architecture, cuisine, and natural beauty of Cuba come to life in this gorgeous, one-of-a-kind tribute to this fascinating island country

This rich, visually stunning book gives a full and unprecedented look at the once forbidden island of Cuba. From the bustling city streets of Havana, to the rushing waterfalls of the lush, verdant countryside, to the fishing communities that dot miles of azure coastline, in Cuba an entire jewel of a country opens up to us as never before.

Large, full-color photographs adorn every page and showcase the landscapes, cityscapes, and seascapes, as well as the faces of the Cuban people. Organized by topic including: The Cuban Character, Havana, The Jungle and the Sea, Tastes of Cuba, Cuban Hospitality, Celebrations, and more, each chapter is framed by an introduction that offers some history and explains about Cuban culture as it exists today.

As the U.S. government begins to lift restrictions on travel, more and more Americans are becoming interested in visiting and learning about Cuba, bringing about an increased fascination with the island.

A ladies' man and rule-breaker, Mac has it all - apart from the money to hold on to his beloved boat. Then Mac is approached by a hotshot Miami lawyer called Carlos with an apparently irresistable offer: a fee of $2 million to run the boat into Havana and smuggle out $60 million from a stash hidden from the Castro government - cash once owned by the family of a beautiful Cuban-American woman named Sara Ortega. With the political 'Cuban Thaw' underway, it's only a matter of time before someone finds the stash. But Mac knows if he accepts this job, he'll walk away rich...or not at all.Punchy, witty and rammed with action, legendary international #1 bestseller Nelson DeMille once more shows he's a true master of the genre.

Viva la Revolucion

Eric Hobsbawm
Authors:
Eric Hobsbawm

In his autobiography Interesting Times: A Twentieth Century Life, published in 2002 when he was eighty-five years old, the historian Eric Hobsbawm (1917-2012) wrote that Latin America was the only region of the world outside Europe which he felt he knew well and where he felt entirely at home. He claimed this was because it was the only part of the Third World whose two principal languages, Spanish and Portuguese, were within his reach. But he was also, of course, attracted by the potential for social revolution in Latin America. After the triumph of Fidel Castro in Cuba in January 1959, and even more after the defeat of the American attempt to overthrow him at the Bay of Pigs in April 1961, 'there was not an intellectual in Europe or the USA', he wrote, 'who was not under the spell of Latin America, a continent apparently bubbling with the lava of social revolutions'. The Third World 'brought the hope of revolution back to the First in the 1960s'. The two great international inspirations were Cuba and Vietnam, 'triumphs not only of revolution, but of Davids against Goliaths, of the weak against the all-powerful'.

Speak My Language, and Other Stories

Torsten Højer
Authors:
Torsten Højer

'There is something special about literature . . . that addresses our innermost sexual and amatory selves. Gay stories offer us vindication, fellowship, validation and a sense of shared identity that we need now as much as ever,' writes Stephen Fry in the foreword to this anthology. In this exciting new collection of gay short stories, we hear from authors imagining, surmising, and revealing aspects of gay life from a multitude of perspectives, ages, eras, locations, cultures and political climates. Contributors range from those emerging into a life of writing to those who have enjoyed international mainstream success. Some, such as Felice Picano, were pioneers of not only gay writing but also gay liberation itself. Others are recipients of world-class awards, including Vestal McIntyre, whose Lake Overturn: A Novel was named Editor's Choice by the New York Times Book Review and Out magazine, and a Best Book of 2009 by the Washington Post. It also won the Grub Street National Book Prize and Lambda Literary Award for Gay Fiction. The premise for stories included in this anthology was very simple - other than the stipulation that a major component of the story be in some way concerned with gay life, there were no restrictions. The aim was to bring together fictional reflections of gay life from the minds of authors approaching 'gay' from very different angles. As a result, genres in this collection range from action to sci-fi, from thriller to fantasy. The stories are set in countries including Australia, Cuba, England, Greece, Italy, Kenya, Portugal, Russia, Somalia, South Africa, Spain, Sri Lanka, and the USA. The youngest contributor is in his twenties, the oldest in his eighties.Readers will find themselves immersed in an engaging set of stories remarkably different from one another, yet, as Stephen Fry notes, offering a surprising sense of shared identity. With stories by: Nick Alexander; Tim Ashley; James Robert Baker; Damian Barr; Neil Bartlett; Sebastian Beaumont; Scott Brown; Michael Carroll; Robert Cochrane; Alfred Corn; Neal Drinnan; Royston Ellis; Nigel Fairs; Hugh Fleetwood; Ronald Frame; Patrick Gale; Damon Galgut; John R. Gordon; Drew Gummerson; Matt Harris; Cliff James; Francis King; Joseph Lidster; David Llewellyn; Paul Magrs; Vestal McIntyre; Brent Meersman; Joseph Olshan; Diriye Osman; Tony Peake; Felice Picano; David Robilliard; Jerry Rosco; Jeffrey Round; Lawrence Schimel; Rupert Smith; Colin Spencer; Joshua Winning; Ian Young; and Richard Zimler.

Native Stranger

Alastair Scott
Authors:
Alastair Scott

After ten years of wanderlust which took him to nearly seventy countries around the world, Alastair Scott decided it was time to make 'home' his destination. Resolving to explore Scotland and the Scottish people in as much depth and breadth as possible, the author drew up an itinerary which would take him from the outermost isle to the innermost city, sampling the experiences of modern Scotland in all their diversity. Encompassing issues of the land, eccentrics in castles, the state of the Gaidheal, homelessness in Edinburgh, and all the idiosyncrasies of history, development and decline in between, Scott's journey covered four thousand miles of island, mountain and lowland. The variety of place and circumstance was exceeded only by that of the characters encountered en route. The result is a detailed and engrossing portrait of contemporary Scotland, and of one man's rediscovery of his native land.
