Seeing Myself

The New Science of Out-of-body Experiences

By Susan Blackmore

  • Paperback
  • £14.99

A new popular psychology title exploring the science behind out-of-body & tunnel experiences (OBEs) from astral projection to near death experiences from a renowned psychologist in the field of consciousness.

Essential reading for anyone seeking to understand their own mind and to find a spiritual path that is compatible with science

As an impressionable young student, Susan Blackmore had an intense, dramatic and life-changing experience, seeming to leave her body and travel the world. With no rational explanation for her out-of-body experience (OBE) she turned to astral projection and the paranormal, but soon despaired of finding answers. Decades later, a Swiss neurosurgeon accidentally discovered the spot in the brain that can induce OBEs and everything changed; this crucial spot is part of the brain's self-system and when disturbed so is our experience of self. Blackmore leaped back into OBE research and at last began to unravel what had happened to her. Seeing Myself describes her long quest for answers through spirituality, religion, drugs, meditation, philosophy and neuroscience.

Anyone can have an OBE, indeed 15 per cent of us have. Even more have experienced sleep paralysis, lucid dreaming and the creepy sense of an invisible presence. At last, with the advent of brain stimulation, fMRI scanning and virtual reality, all these phenomena are beginning to make sense. Long relegated to the very fringes of research, the new science of out-of-body experiences is now contributing to our understanding of consciousness and our very selves.

Biographical Notes

Susan J. Blackmore is a distinguished and influential psychologist, known for her books exploring consciousness, memetics, evolution and spirituality. Her first book, Beyond the Body (1982), was hailed as a classic and the (then) definitive work on OBEs. She is a visiting professor at the University of Plymouth and a freelance writer, giving lectures all over the world both at academic conferences and to the public.

The Disordered Mind

Eric R. Kandel
Authors:
Eric R. Kandel

'[Kandel's discoveries] have truly changed our understanding of brain function' - Citation for the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine'[Eric Kandel is] one of the preeminent neuroscientists in the world' - Sue Halpern, The New York Review of Books Neurological and psychiatric disorders have long been regarded as fundamentally different, depending on whether they appear to affect the brain or the mind. In reality, the brain and the mind are inseparable. Both types of disorder can affect every aspect of brain function: from perception, action, memory and emotion to empathy, social interaction, attention and consciousness. It is easy to view brain disorders as simply tragic or frightening. However, studying where these functions go wrong provides a window on the workings of the healthy brain, and makes it more likely that scientists and clinicians will be able to develop effective treatments or preventative strategies. As individuals, and as a society, we are also able to better empathise with people with disorders of the mind.Building on his pioneering research, Eric R. Kandel illustrates how breakthrough studies of brain disruptions can deepen our understanding of thought, feeling, behaviour, memory and creativity, and perhaps in the future will transform medical care and lead to the development of a unified theory of mind.

Willpower Doesn't Work

Benjamin Hardy
Authors:
Benjamin Hardy

'Benjamin Hardy is one of the leading voices on well-being and productivity. Willpower Doesn't Work is an insightful guide to help us thrive in today's world.' - Arianna Huffington'If you only read one book in 2018, make it this one . . .' - Inc.If you're relying on willpower alone to help you lose weight, improve your relationships or achieve more at work, you're doomed to fail. The environment around us is far too powerful, stimulating, addicting and stressful to overcome it through sheer determination. Willpower, grit, being positive - basically, all the tools you've been told are the keys to creating lasting change in your life - are insufficient in this high-paced, information-overloaded world we live in. The only way to stop just surviving and learn to truly thrive in today's world is to proactively shape your environment. That's the premise of Willpower Doesn't Work, by organizational psychologist and Medium's most-read self-help guru Benjamin Hardy. Building on copious existing research, as well as his own experience of growing up in a broken family afflicted by addiction and drug use, Hardy explains how people can change their lives on every level by making small, impactful changes in their environment like:* Creating "enriched environments" - using tougher challenges and self-imposed deadlines to force yourself to rise to the occasion.* Growing into your goals - using radical personal accountability to keep yourself on target and on track.* Becoming the teacher - stepping into a leadership role (even before you think you're ready) to accelerate your skills.* Rotating your environments - getting out of your rut by literally changing your physical surroundings throughout the day or week. From simple steps like removing things that conflict with your values from your environment (like junk food, junk media, even junk people), to incorporating new tools (like fasting or adding "positive triggers" to your world), these lessons make it possible to consciously shape your surroundings so you can lead a more productive and happier life. Hardy leans on his own story of making the decision to foster three young children to illustrate how any shift, no matter how huge, can become "the new normal" if you support that change with a productive environment.

Reactions

Theodore Gray
Authors:
Theodore Gray

With Reactions bestselling author Theodore Gray continues the journey through our molecular and chemical world that began with the tour de force The Elements and continued with Molecules. In The Elements, Gray gave us a never-before-seen, mesmerizing photographic view of the 118 elements in the periodic table. In Molecules, with the same phenomenal photographic acumen, plus beautifully rendered computer generated graphics, he showed us how the elements combine to form the content that makes up our universe, from table salt to oxygen to the panoply of colors and smells that surround us. At last, we've reached Reactions, in which Gray once again puts his photography and storytelling to work demonstrating how molecules interact in ways that are essential to our very existence. The book begins with a brief recap of elements and molecules and then goes on to explain important concepts the characterize a chemical reaction, including Energy, Entropy, and Time. It is then organized by type of reaction including Combustion, Photosynthesis, Respiration, Oxidation, and Fermentation. A special section dedicated to chemical cycles includes The Carbon Cycle, The Iron Cycle, and The Lime Cycle.

Tales from the Vatican Vaults

David V. Barrett
Authors:
David V. Barrett

A captivating collection of original science fiction and fantasy stories based on the same alternate world premise: a collection of documents that have been suppressed by the Vatican and hidden away for years, in some cases centuries, are revealed when the vaults are thrown open by a reforming pope.In this alternate reality, Pope John Paul (I) does not die a month after his accession in 1978; instead he lives on for over 30 years to become the most reforming pope of all time. In addition to relaxing the rules on birth control and priestly celibacy he also opens up the most secret parts of the Vatican Library to scholars . . .In the Vatican's deepest vaults, documents are discovered which shed new light on world history, containing information which, if true, would cause many parts of accepted history to have to be rewritten. These include not just the undercover involvement of the Catholic Church in world affairs, but documented accounts of what really happened in historical conundrums, the real lives of saints and popes, miracles, magic, angels and even alien encounters.

Miracles from Heaven

Christy Wilson Beam
Authors:
Christy Wilson Beam

Annabel Beam is one of three sisters raised in the Texas countryside by loving parents. But what should have been a happy, carefree childhood was blighted when Annabel developed a painful and seemingly incurable digestive disorder. Her parents spared no expense in the search for a cure, but medical experts assured them there was none. On a rare day when Annabel felt well enough to play outside, she was climbing an old hollowed-out tree when a branch snapped and she fell, head first, thirty feet down inside the tree. Miraculously, she survived the fall but was knocked unconscious. Rescued and later released from hospital, Annabel told her mother, 'you know I went to heaven when I was in that tree'. Annabel shared with her mother her amazing experience of talking to God, who told her that it wasn't her time and that she must go back. What happened next was the greatest miracle of all. Annabel was inexplicably cured of her illness and her doctors could offer no explanation. Written by Annabel's mother Christy, Miracles from Heaven is the story of a little girl's - and a family's - inspiring journey. Deeply moving and heartwarming, the book recounts the fateful day of the accident, Annabel's description of her time in heaven and her miraculous recovery. This is the story of how one family never gave up hope.
