Too Many Pills

How Too Much Medicine is Endangering Our Health and What We Can Do About It

By James Le Fanu

  • E-Book
  • £P.O.R.

An eye-opening account of the over-medicalisation of our lives, by a leading medical practitioner and popular Telegraph health expert.

The number of prescriptions issued by family doctors has soared threefold in just fifteen years with millions now committed to taking a cocktail of half a dozen (or more) different pills to lower the blood pressure and sugar levels, statins, bone strengthening and cardio protective drugs. In Too Many Pills, doctor and writer James Le Fanu examines how this progressive medicalisation of people's lives now poses a major threat to their health and wellbeing, responsible for a hidden epidemic of drug induced illness (muscular aches and pains, lethargy, insomnia, impaired memory and general decrepitude), a sharp increase in the number of emergency hospital admissions for serious side effects and implicated in the recently noted decline in life expectancy.

The paradoxically harmful, if increasingly well recognised, consequences of too much medicine are illustrated by the remarkable personal testimony of the readers of James Le Fanu's weekly medical column, coerced into taking drugs they do not need, debilitated by their adverse effects - and their almost miraculous recovery on discontinuing them. The only solution, he argues, is for the public to take the initiative. His review of the relevant evidence for the efficacy, or otherwise, of commonly prescribed drugs should allow readers of Too Many Pills to ask much more searching questions about the benefits and risks of the medicines they are taking.

The Doctor Crisis

Charles C. Kenney, Jack Cochran
Authors:
Charles C. Kenney, Jack Cochran

Calming fears, alleviating suffering, enhancing and saving lives, this is what motivates doctors virtually every single day. When the structure and culture in which physicians work are well aligned, being a doctor is a most rewarding job. But something has gone wrong in the physician world, and it is urgent that we fix it.Fundamental flaws in the US health care system make it more difficult and less rewarding than ever to be a doctor. The convergence of a complex amalgam of forces prevents primary care and specialty physicians from doing what they most want to do: Put their patients first at every step in the care process every time. Barriers include regulation, bureaucracy, the liability burden, reduced reimbursements, and much more. Physicians must accept the responsibility for guiding our nation toward a better health care delivery system, but the pathway forward, amidst jarring changes in our health care system,is not always clear. In The Doctor Crisis , Dr. Jack Cochran, executive director of The Permanente Federation, and author Charles Kenney show how we can improve health care on a grassroots level, regardless of political policy disputes, by improving conditions for physicians and asking them to take on broader accountability by calling on physicians to be effective leaders as well as excellent clinicians. The authors clarify the necessary steps required to enable physicians to focus on patient care and offer concrete ideas for establishing systems that place patients' needs above all else. Cochran and Kenney make a compelling case that fixing the doctor crisis is a prerequisite to achieving access to quality and affordable health care throughout the United States.

The New Science of Overcoming Arthritis

Greg Ptacek, Thomas Vangsness
Authors:
Greg Ptacek, Thomas Vangsness

Battle the growing arthritis epidemic by taking steps now. Arthritis is truly an epidemic: more than 40 million Americans currently have arthritis, it is the leading cause of disability among people age 65 and older, and the overall annual costs to society are figured to be more than 65 billion. While it is present in nearly everyone by age 70, the problem is growing as arthritis more commonly appears in people as young as their 30s. But there is good news, while you can't cure arthritis, you can stave it off or manage it and dramatically improve your life. The New Science of Overcoming Arthritis offers a plan for anyone who wants to prevent or reverse their pain, discomfort, and limitations. It is the first book on arthritis that incorporates the latest research and treatment strategies for a disease that the vast majority of baby boomers will inevitably have to learn to live with. What's more, it provides younger generations with an easy-to-follow game plan for minimizing and even avoiding the more debilitating aspects of arthritis. It answers the most pressing questions, including: Why do we get arthritis? Which arthritis supplements are worthwhile? What are the best arthritis exercise and diet strategies? Which alternative therapies are sensible and safe? What is the latest science about stem cells and future therapies involving our genes and biology? Dr. Vangsness, a seasoned surgeon and team physician for USC Athletics, specializes in sports injuries and is a medical advisor on the cutting edge of arthritis research. He provides practical advice culled from his years working with star collegiate athletes, who are often on the front line in uncovering the best practices for dealing with injuries and the deterioration of the body's joints. While genetics play a large role in determining who will suffer from arthritis, and even how severely, there are strategies for staying active, pain-free, and healthy no matter who you are.
