Open Boundaries

Creating Business Innovation Through Complexity

By Howard Sherman and Ron Schultz

  • Paperback
  • £9.99

Today's businesses are constantly under pressure to innovate,to develop new products, processes, and even organizational structures,in order to remain vibrant and healthy. But many businesses fall into the trap of doing more of the same, only faster. How can they break free of old patterns without overextending their resources or losing sight of their core goals and capabilities? In Open Boundaries, Howard Sherman and Ron Schultz bring fresh, new insights from the field of complexity thinking, the study of dynamic evolving systems,to unleash creativity and innovation throughout the organization. Drawing from their ground-breaking research at the Santa Fe centre for Emergent Strategies, the authors challenge readers to explore the underlying principles, cognitive models, and rules that govern their decisions and actions to reveal, and, more importantly, overcome, obstacles to innovation and growth. Open Boundaries introduces a practical vocabulary to help managers understand, analyze, and nurture the creative process by eschewing linear "cause-and-effect" approaches to decision making in favour of an approach that thrives on ambiguity and unpredictability. Showcasing the pioneering efforts of such organizations as Xerox-PARC, Applied Biosystems, Patagonia, and the United States Marine Corps, the authors vividly illustrate the power of complexity thinking in action, from creating new markets to establishing new ways of spreading emerging knowledge throughout the company.Ultimately, Open Boundaries is about ideas, the most powerful of which is realizing that organizations are not mechanical entities, but living systems that are constantly adjusting and adapting to both internal and external forces of change. By embracing this perspective, businesses can become far more creative, innovative, and profitable than they might have ever thought possible.

Women with Money

Jean Chatzky
Authors:
Jean Chatzky

Ask successful women what they want from their money and they'll tell you: independence, security, choices, a better world, and-oh yes-way less stress, not just for themselves but for their kids, spouses, partners, parents, and friends. Through a series of Happy Hour discussions (when money is the topic, wine helps) and one-on-one conversations, Jean Chatzky gets women to open up about the one topic we still never talk about. Then she flips the script and charts a pathway to this joyful, purpose-filled life that today's women not only want but also, finally, have the resources to afford. Chatzky's candid three-part plan-formed through detailed reporting with the world's top economists, psychiatrists, behaviorists, financial planners, and attorneys, as well as her own two decades of experience in the field-involves helping women understand themselves in relation to money. Readers will wrap their hands around tactical solutions to get paid what they deserve, become inspired to start businesses, invest for tomorrow, make their money last, and then use that money to foster secure relationships, raise independent and confident children, send those kids to college, care for their aging parents, leave a legacy, and-best of all-bring them joy!

The Big Nine

Amy Webb
Authors:
Amy Webb

We like to think that we are in control of the future of "artificial" intelligence. The reality, though, is that we--the everyday people whose data powers AI--aren't actually in control of anything. When, for example, we speak with Alexa, we contribute that data to a system we can't see and have no input into--one largely free from regulation or oversight. The big nine corporations--Amazon, Google, Facebook, Tencent, Baidu, Alibaba, Microsoft, IBM and Apple--are the new gods of AI and are short-changing our futures to reap immediate financial gain. In this book, Amy Webb reveals the pervasive, invisible ways in which the foundations of AI--the people working on the system, their motivations, the technology itself--are broken. Within our lifetimes, AI will, by design, begin to behave unpredictably, thinking and acting in ways which defy human logic. The big nine corporations may be inadvertently building and enabling vast arrays of intelligent systems that don't share our motivations, desires, or hopes for the future of humanity.Much more than a passionate, human-centered call-to-arms, this book delivers a strategy for changing course, and provides a path for liberating us from algorithmic decision-makers and powerful corporations.

The Book of Mistakes

Skip Prichard
Authors:
Skip Prichard

In the spirit of Fish! and The Go-Giver, Skip Prichard draws on a lifetime of studying success to share the 9 mistakes wildly accomplished people know not to make, so you can avoid them too! What if the world's most accomplished people are so successful because they avoid nine pitfalls in life that the rest of us are not aware of? In this self-help wrapped in fiction tale, Skip Prichard introduces a young man named David who with each passing day is becoming more disheartened and stressed. His life isn't turning out the way he thought it would. Despite having a decent job, apartment and friends, his life just feels hollow...until one day he meets a mysterious young woman and everything starts to change. David will meet nine people who have each discovered a core truth of achieving a successful and satisfying life by recognizing a key mistake they were making. Like David, most of us are repeating the same mistakes, and while we may learn from them it is often too late and the lesson comes with a good dose of pain. But what if we could identify the mistakes before we made them? This little parable is packed with wisdom that will help you discover and follow your personal purpose, push beyond your perceived capabilities and achieve more than you ever dreamed possible.

This Is How We Rise

Claudia Chan
Authors:
Claudia Chan

Women remain the disadvantaged sex throughout the world, despite centuries of progress toward equality. We are so close to a tipping point, as women have never held more power: women control social media, influence their families' buying and consuming habits, and are a powerful force in elections. But many times, individuals may see or experience a women's issue at work or in the world at large and feel they can't do anything about it. So how do we harness women's personal and collective power to bring about change and finally achieve gender equality? To business leader Claudia Chan, the key lies in empowering women to achieve their own personal potential while reigniting engagement in the feminist movement. It's not just about you--stepping up in your own life lets you lift other women up with you and paves the way for others to follow. In THIS IS HOW WE RISE, Chan shares how to get beyond the limiting beliefs that hold you back, transform feminine traits once thought of as weakness into assets, and cultivate the internal habits to succeed and lead. Then, she shows how to put that personal power to work at a wider level by identifying the issues that really matter to you, raising awareness, and getting authentically involved.

So Good They Can't Ignore You

Cal Newport
Authors:
Cal Newport

Cal Newport's clearly-written manifesto flies in the face of conventional wisdom by suggesting that it should be a person's talent and skill - and not necessarily their passion - that determines their career path. Newport, who graduated from Dartmouth College (Phi Beta Kappa) and earned a PhD. from MIT, contends that trying to find what drives us, instead of focusing on areas in which we naturally excel, is ultimately harmful and frustrating to job seekers. The title is a direct quote from comedian Steve Martin who, when once asked why he was successful in his career, immediately replied: "Be so good they can't ignore you" and that's the main basis for Newport's book. Skill and ability trump passion. Inspired by former Apple CEO Steve Jobs' famous Stanford University commencement speech in which Jobs urges idealistic grads to chase their dreams, Newport takes issue with that advice, claiming that not only is thsi advice Pollyannish, but that Jobs himself never followed his own advice. From there, Newport presents compelling scientific and contemporary case study evidence that the key to one's career success is to find out what you do well, where you have built up your 'career capital,' and then to put all of your efforts into that direction.
