Alpha Girls

The Women Upstarts Who Took on Silicon Valley's Male Culture and Made the Deals of a Lifetime

By Julian Guthrie

  • E-Book
  • £P.O.R.

Silicon Valley has long been at the forefront of innovation, but it is renowned for its archaic sexist culture. Alpha Girls is the inspiring story of how a group of talented women have achieved success in a tech world run by 'bro-grammers' through sheer grit and determination.

The unforgettable story of four women who, through grit and ingenuity, became stars in the cutthroat, high-stakes, male-dominated world of venture capital in Silicon Valley and helped build some of the foremost companies of our time.

Described as 'the book that the world needs right now' (Adam Fisher, author of Valley of Genius) Alpha Girls is perfect for fans of Hidden Figures, Lean In and The Social Network.

In Alpha Girls, award-winning journalist Julian Guthrie takes readers behind the closed doors of venture capital, an industry that transforms economies and shapes how we live. We follow the lives and careers of four women who were largely written out of history - until now.

*Magdalena Yesil arrived in America from Turkey with $43 to her name and would go on to help Marc Benioff build Salesforce.
*Mary Jane Elmore went from the cornfields of Indiana to Stanford and on to the storied venture capital firm IVP - where she was one of the first women in the United States to make partner.
*Theresia Gouw, an overachieving first-generation Asian American from a working-class town, helped land and build companies including Facebook, Trulia, Imperva and ForeScout.
*Sonja Hoel, the first woman investing partner at Menlo Ventures, invested in McAfee, Hotmail, Acme Packet and F5 Networks as well as founding an all-women's investment group and a national nonprofit for girls.

These women, juggling work and family, shaped the tech landscape we know today while overcoming unequal pay, actual punches, betrayals and the sexist attitudes prevalent in Silicon Valley. Despite the setbacks, they would rise again to rewrite the rules for an industry they love. Alpha Girls reveals their untold stories.

Nobody's Victim

Carrie Goldberg
Authors:
Carrie Goldberg

Nobody's Victim is an unflinching look at a hidden world most people don't know exists - one of stalking, blackmail, and sexual violence, online and off - and the incredible story of how one lawyer, determined to fight back, turned her own hell into a revolution. "We are all a moment away from having our life overtaken by somebody hell-bent on our destruction." That grim reality - gleaned from personal experience and twenty years of trauma work - is a fundamental principle of Carrie Goldberg's cutting-edge victims' rights law firm. Riveting and an essential timely conversation-starter, Nobody's Victim invites readers to join Carrie on the front lines of the war against sexual violence and privacy violations as she fights for revenge porn and sextortion laws, uncovers major Title IX violations, and sues the hell out of tech companies, schools, and powerful sexual predators. Her battleground is the courtroom; her crusade is to transform clients from victims into warriors. In gripping detail, Carrie shares the diabolical ways her clients are attacked and how she, through her unique combination of advocacy, badass relentlessness, risk-taking, and client-empowerment, pursues justice for them all. There are stories about a woman whose ex-boyfriend made fake bomb threats in her name and caused a national panic; a fifteen-year-old girl who was sexually assaulted on school grounds and then suspended when she reported the attack; and a man whose ex-boyfriend used a dating app to send more than 1,200 men to ex's home and work for sex. With breathtaking honesty, Carrie also shares her own shattering story about why she began her work and the uphill battle of building a business. While her clients are a diverse group-from every gender, sexual orientation, age, class, race, religion, occupation, and background-the offenders are not. They are highly predictable. In this book, Carrie offers a taxonomy of the four types of offenders she encounters most often at her firm: assholes, psychos, pervs, and trolls. 'If we recognise the patterns of these perpetrators,' she explains, 'we know how to fight back.; Deeply personal yet achingly universal, Nobody's Victim is a bold and much-needed analysis of victim protection in the era of the Internet. This book is an urgent warning of a coming crisis, a predictor of imminent danger, and a weapon to take back control and protect ourselves-both online and off.

Voices from the Blue

Jennifer Rees, Robert J. Strange
Authors:
Jennifer Rees, Robert J. Strange

'God, I love these women! Their breeziness, compassion, humour and resilience are a tonic'Libby Purves, Times Literary SupplementIn February 1919, London's first women police officers took to the streets of the city. They battled entrenched gender stereotypes, institutional inequality, sexual harassment and assaults disturbingly familiar to those affecting today's #MeToo generation of modern women. Female officers, facing resentment from male colleagues, were expected to do little more than 'Make the tea, luv . . .' and were charged with the sole task of looking after women and children who fell into police hands.Yet, in the course of a century, policewomen have won the equality they demanded, overcome sexism and prejudice, rejected harassment and sexual assaults and smashed through the glass ceiling to lead, rather than follow, their male colleagues. One hundred years on from those first Women Police Constables, a woman, Cressida Dick, holds the most powerful position in British policing, the Metropolitan Police Commissioner. Voices from the Blue tells the story of the hundred years of service of female police officers within the Metropolitan Police through the voices of the women who fought their way towards equality and won the respect of both their colleagues and the public. The authors have interviewed hundreds of former and serving policewomen and with the co-operation of the Metropolitan Police and the Women's Police Association now have access to the files and stories of thousands of former officers who served over the past hundred years. Those police archives, together with material held by the National Archives and private libraries, provide a detailed and fascinating oral history of the challenges women police officers faced down the years.

'Wilfred's sheer ambition is an inspiration. We can all learn from it.' - Peter Bazalgette'Based on my career, Wilfred Emmanuel-Jones' approach to risk can produce huge dividends' - Nigel Travis, chairman of Dunkin' Brands and author of The Challenge CultureJeopardy is the single greatest catalyst for making things happen in life.In Jeopardy, award-winning entrepreneur Wilfred Emmanuel-Jones argues that our natural instinct for caution is one of the greatest barriers to making progress in life, and shows how embracing jeopardy is essential if you want to succeed.Drawing on a life that has taken him from a deprived childhood in inner-city Birmingham to becoming one of the nation's most famous farmers, he demonstrates how we can all go further in life by learning to escape the fears that stop us from achieving our ambitions.Wilfred Emmanuel-Jones is no stranger to jeopardy: he remortgaged his house in 2005 to launch his brand 'The Black Farmer' from nothing. Its products are now stocked in all major supermarkets and the business has an annual turnover of several million. In this book, he shows that only by embracing jeopardy, and liberating ourselves from the shackles of uncertainty and self-doubt, can we realise our full potential. What could you achieve, if you decided to stop letting fear hold you back?

This Is How We Rise

Claudia Chan
Authors:
Claudia Chan

Women remain the disadvantaged sex throughout the world, despite centuries of progress toward equality. We are so close to a tipping point, as women have never held more power: women control social media, influence their families' buying and consuming habits, and are a powerful force in elections. But many times, individuals may see or experience a women's issue at work or in the world at large and feel they can't do anything about it. So how do we harness women's personal and collective power to bring about change and finally achieve gender equality? To business leader Claudia Chan, the key lies in empowering women to achieve their own personal potential while reigniting engagement in the feminist movement. It's not just about you--stepping up in your own life lets you lift other women up with you and paves the way for others to follow. In THIS IS HOW WE RISE, Chan shares how to get beyond the limiting beliefs that hold you back, transform feminine traits once thought of as weakness into assets, and cultivate the internal habits to succeed and lead. Then, she shows how to put that personal power to work at a wider level by identifying the issues that really matter to you, raising awareness, and getting authentically involved.
