Meet the rights team
Diane Spivey - Rights and Contracts Director
I joined Little, Brown in the summer of 2005 to take on the newly created role of rights and contracts director, so I have responsibility for both areas. I had previously worked for companies as diverse as Simon & Schuster, Cassell, Harrap and Hodder & Stoughton. I oversee the rights department, and love the challenge of rights selling and the satisfaction of clinching a deal, but much of my time is taken up with rights issues: particularly important as changes are coming thick and fast in our industry. Combining my knowledge of rights with my responsibility for contracts, I get involved in boilerplate negotiations with literary agencies, group contract issues and developments in the trade at large, as well as the fine detail of day-to-day contract negotiations. I work closely with our Contracts Manager, Anniina Vuori, and Contracts Executive, Emma Mojarab. Permissions requests are also handled within the rights and contracts department and can be addressed to firstname.lastname@example.org. Other rights queries can be emailed to email@example.com. During 2011 and 2012 I have been partially seconded to a Hachette UK-wide IT project, implementing the Biblio system in rights and contracts departments across the group, so I am spending much of my time flitting between the various London offices. This satisfies my love of all things administrative, but I wouldn’t give up the day job for the world!
Andy Hine - Foreign Rights Director
I joined Little, Brown as rights executive in 1996, after ten years of freelance work in publishing, and became foreign rights director in 2005. I handle serial rights with my colleague Helena Doree, film rights, large print and audio in the Little, Brown list. I look after translation rights in the territories excluding France, Greece, Israel, Middle East, Far East, Portugal and Spain. We work closely with editorial, marketing, publicity and sales following a title from acquisition stage to publication always with a view to rights potential. Selling rights and discovering new markets for rights is challenging and rewarding and on-going. There is nothing more exciting than to watch a book fulfil or surpass its rights forecast and take off in the global market. Little, Brown Book Group has a terrific, diverse and inspiring list of imprints of fiction and nonfiction and I feel privileged to work on these titles. For me, working in Rights is job satisfaction guaranteed.
Kate Hibbert - US Rights Director/ Rights Manager
I joined Little, Brown, part-time, in 2007 when it acquired Piatkus, and I looked after certain rights for that imprint (the rest of the time I worked for Hodder). I became a full-time member of the rights department in 2010. I and my colleagues, Andy Hine and Helena Doree, divide our work by territory, so I look after American and Dutch language rights, and all foreign rights in the Far East – Japanese, Korean, Chinese and so on - and also Spain and Portugal. I still look after certain domestic rights for Piatkus, too. Apart from my first four years in publishing as an editorial assistant, my career has been entirely in rights where satisfaction is guaranteed, in my view, and particularly so at Little, Brown where the rights department is not just a lonely publishing outpost; we are part of the acquisition process, and try to provide useful ideas and information for editors when they are putting together world rights offers. For me, concluding a deal is a thrill; even more of a thrill is when an author we have sold receives awards, reviews and good sales figures for editions in other territories.
Helena Doree - Rights Manager
I joined Little, Brown as rights assistant in September 2007, just after graduating from King’s College London and the Sorbonne with an English and French Law degree. Having lived in Paris for three years I was drawn to the world of translation rights and have not been disappointed by this highly rewarding part of the publishing business. As rights manager I handle translation rights in France, Turkey, Israel, Greece and Arabic-speaking territories. I also look after radio reading rights and half of all our serialisation deals alongside our foreign rights director, Andy Hine. Letting authors know that their work is going to be translated into a foreign language, or will be read on 4 Radio, and thus reach thousands more readers, is a great buzz that I expect I will never tire of.
