1. Pay attention. Give them your full undivided attention when you are with them. Research shows the average couple spends only two waking hours together a day, make sure every minute counts.
2. Ensure there is an element of surprise. Do something that they don’t expect. Leave a note in their bag or book late tickets to a show. They will feel you are thinking of them even when you aren’t with them.
3. Share dreams. Talk about what you both wish for. You can then work together on making them a reality and with two of you onboard it could happen quicker.
4. Empathise even if they are wrong. Start by sharing their concern. The neighbours may be tricky but not ridiculously difficult, however by agreeing and hearing them out they will feel more valued.
5. Include them. Whether making a cup of tea for your team or inviting your girlfriend out with your mates. Involving them in the little things you are doing day-to-day makes a big difference.
6. Don’t keep a score. Do things that you know will mean something to them and not in the hope of what you might get back in return.
