Banish the Back to School Blues

Strange new people, strange new smells, an embarrassing mum-inflicted haircut and the ignominy of having your lunch money stolen by the person you sit next to . . . but enough about my working life, do you remember what it was like going back to school?!

If you know someone who was less than thrilled by returning this week, how about giving them a little cheering reading matter? I'd suggest Bill Watterson's Calvin and Hobbes classic Something Under the Bed is Drooling for starters, but what would you recommend?

Post your suggestions below.

I may be making sweeping generalisations about teachers the length and breadth of the land, but I can't help thinking You Don't Have To Be Evil To Work Here, But It Helps by Tom Holt might bring a smile to the odd face . . .

I'd have to say 'Is it Just Me Or Is Everything S***' is an appropriate title to sum up how you feel about that first week back but will also help to raise a smile ...

Well I don't know how much it would ease the way, but CLASS by Jane Beaton is a fab new novel - like Mallory Towers for grown-ups, and it certainly charts the trials and tribulations of both a new teacher, and a class of 13 year old girls as they start a new school year.

Read ME TALK PRETTY ONE DAY. It is the funniest book I have ever read. The part where David Sedaris is back at school, learning French with a tryannical teacher is absolutely hilarious. Surely your teacher couldn't bring a class of adults close to tears . . .
