Shovels at the ready

The festive inquisition: Richard Greene

What is your favourite Christmas memory?

I was born in Newfoundland where there are sometimes snowstorms that would be unimaginable in the British Isles. When I was two, our house was literally buried in snow at Christmas. The electricity was out, so we waited with candles by a fireplace in the living room till someone came to dig us out.

What is the worst present you’ve ever given or received?

I think I once gave my balding father a comb.

What are your plans for this Christmas?

To stay at home (near Toronto), my shovel at the ready.

Are you giving any books this Christmas?

I am surrounded by people addicted to Alexander McCall Smith. Members of my family have tamed a squirrel and called it Mr. Polopetsi, after the imprisoned pharmacist in those novels. I suspect I will be buying books in The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency series.

What book would you most like to receive this Christmas?

Norman Mailer’s The Castle in the Forest.

Do you have any tips for surviving the festive period?

Delay reading The Castle in the Forest until January
