Have nothing to do with the Christmas pudding

Peter Lovesey shares his memories of Hershey Bars and a strange-speaking Santa.

1. What is your favourite Christmas memory?

As a kid in 1944. We'd lost our home to a VI rocket. My brothers and I were invited to a children's Christmas party at a local American air base. My first experience of Hershey bars, chewing gum, a cartoon film show, a magician and such food as I didn't know existed. A strange-speaking Santa was there as well and we came away with armfuls of toys. The generosity of those GIs will always be a cherished memory.

2. What is the worst present you’ve ever given or received?

(a) A so-called champagne that made us both ill

(b) A cherry brandy that put me off sweet liqueurs for life

3. What are your plans for this Christmas?

See my answer to 6.

4. Are you giving any books as gifts this Christmas?

No. Book tokens, yes. I've always thought it best for people to choose their own. That goes for jewellery as well.

5. Is there a certain book which you’d love to receive this Christmas?

No. I'm buying them all year round, so I'd rather have a night out.

6. Any tips for surviving the festive period?

Have nothing to do with the Christmas pudding.
