The Gay Divorcee by Paul Burston has been well received by the press since its publication on 7th May:
'The Gay Divorcee is another accomplished entertainment... a rollicking, steamy, witty saga steeped in love, sex and no small amount of cocaine... Sexual politics underscore the delicious froth' The Times
*** 3 stars - Hot Stars! (OK! magazine)
'Bitchy, funny, romantic and now - Burston's best work yet' www.homovision.tv
'Piercing contemporary wit **** 4 stars' Diva magazine
Several events helped to launch the book:
On Tuesday May 12th The Ghetto in Shoreditch hosted a pre-launch stag night event. They had a stag's head, novelty horns and antlers, masks of the groom (Paul Burston), and even a (semi) stripper in the seemly shape of poet Trevor Medicine. Books were sold courtesy of Blackwells.
On Thursday 14th May Paul attended a Jake media event to give a talk and a reading from The Gay Divorcee. This was held in the posh surroundings of Whisky Mist in Mayfair. The venue had been decked out in flowers, and delicious champagne cocktails were handed out by the waiting staff. Books were sold courtesy of Joe and William at Prowler who informed us that The Gay Divorcee is selling fast!
Then on Wednesday, 20th May, we had the official launch party for The Gay Divorcee at Polari Wedding Night at Freedom. In many ways it was just like Paul's wedding reception. His parents were there. His best man was there. His friends were there. And most important of all, his husband was there. Susie Boyt made us a wedding cake, DJ Dom played some wedding tunes, Celine Hispiche sang, Trevor Medicine performed his poem about his parents' divorce and Paul gave a reading from the book. The champagne flowed, courtesy of Pommery, who kindly sponsored the event. Books were kindly supplied by Foyles.
And then on Thursday 21st Paul gave a reading at Gay's the Word bookshop, to a packed audience!
The first two of the following pics were taken at the stag-do by Dom Agius and are used here with his kind permission. The last two were taken at the launch party by Mark Obstfeld, who also very kindly gave us permission to use them here:
