Lisa Appignanesi appeared at the Kingston Readers Festival on Wednesday 20 May, where she gave a talk on her book Mad, Bad and Sad: A History of Women and the Mind Doctors from 1800 to the Present which was published in paperback by Virago in January 2009.

Iain [M] Banks will be one of the guests of this year's Prague Writers Festival, which runs from June 7 - 11. He will be taking part in a Guardian Conversation panel discussion on "The Freedom to Lie" and will be part of the International Reading session, as well as signing books at two bookstores in the city.

First off, let me just make it clear that I have no intention of ever becoming a gay divorcee. I may have written a book called The Gay Divorcee, and I may be a dedicated follower of fashion, but I have no plans to follow in the footsteps of Matt Lucas and join the ranks of gay men who married their partners in civil ceremonies only to break up with them a year or so later.
