5 Ways to buy the right present for your mum on Mother's Day

More advice from the folks at the Mind Gym. This time with Mother's Day fast-approaching, a few suggestions to ensure you don't end up in your Mum's bad-books on Sunday.

1. Think about what she would really want rather than what you would like to give her. You may be itching to spruce up her wardrobe with a new dress, but if she'd be happier in a smart new pair of wellies, bite the bullet and buy them.

2. Inspire her to experience something new, from ice skating to stand-up comedy.

3. Get creative. Avoid presenting your mum with a beautiful but boring bunch of flowers by taking a few minutes to brainstorm some fresh ideas. When you have at least 20, score their likely reaction from grimace to rapture.

4. Choose something that reinforces the way she'd like to see herself - Marilyn Monroe lipstick versus Snoopy socks.

5. Show you've made an effort. An ipod is great, but even better is an ipod already loaded it up with her favourite tunes and a playlist that will remind her of you.
