My New Year’s Resolution

Me being me, I leave my ‘resolving’ for the coming year until the last bong of Big Ben, and then decide to do the first thing that comes to mind. If something is on my mind at that moment, it’s usually important enough for me to need to follow it through into the next year.

At the stroke of midnight last year, I had a glass of champagne in my hand and was gazing at the fireworks over Sydney Harbour Bridge when someone asked me what my resolution for 2007 was. I immediately replied, ‘To get married.’ Seeing as I was single that was a big ask, so I amended it to, ‘To get engaged.’ It took nine months, but I was successful – in a way that I didn’t expect: I’ve become betrothed to a little area down in East Sussex and all going well, in 2008, I’ll be taking the plunge and making a life-long commitment to live here for ever.

I feel I should point out that I don’t ‘give up’ things for New Year. Any bad habits I have are pretty much ingrained and are a (hopefully) loveable part of my personality. If I have a habit that I really do need to erase from my life, I usually decide to change it immediately and then do it. If I left it until New Year’s Eve (or Lent) then I’d find a million ways to make that habit worse before that time came around.

So, that’s my long-winded way of saying I’ll find out on the twelfth stroke of midnight, literally at the start 2008, what I’ll be working towards that year. It’s much more fun that way.
