Money money money

When Sarah, our Audio Commissioning Editor asked a group of us if we would like to be part of the audience at a recording session for the next Benjamin Fry audiobook, I jumped at the chance. Not just because I’d never been to see an audiobook being recorded, or because it was an entire morning out of the office with lunch.  But because Benjamin Fry’s book is called How To Be Rich.  Oh yes, I was finally going to learn how to make big money even with a career in publishing.

The audio book was recorded as a live seminar, complete with questions from us, the audience.  The interactive style of the recording made for a really interesting morning.  But, unfortunately my hopes of making it rich quick were a little off the mark as Benjamin’s approach is not to offer hair-brained schemes of making money, but rather to get the bottom of why we overspend and tackle these underlying issues (Benjamin is also the presenter of BBC’s Spendaholics).  Throughout the morning we explored the five main reasons why we overspend, followed with a Q&A after each section.  The section on unresolved issues with parents seemed to have most of us in agreement, provoking some very personal questions from all of us (but you’ll have to listen to the audio book to find out what they were, and I’m not telling you which ones were mine).

But my great mood after a thoroughly enjoyable morning was slightly dampened when I got out of the studio only to receive a call from my bank. ‘Miss Mooney we’ve noticed that as well as a large overdraft, you also have a loan and a credit card with us.  Would you like to see how we can help you improve your financial situation?’

I think maybe I need some one-to-one sessions with Benjamin.
