Happy Birthday Between the Sheets!

Between the Sheets is a year old in December, and it’s got us thinking about the things we’ve learnt in 2008 – not all of them in any way valuable. So while we’re not stuffing our faces with cake (What? We just said it was our birthday), we’d be delighted to let you in on our discoveries over the last twelve months. A year older, a year wiser and all that. Hmm.

‘Over the last year I’ve learnt how to grow chillies on a windowsill, how to knit socks (harder than it looks but very satisfying), how to run 10k in one go without being sick and how to make a quite delicious (if I do so say so myself) roasted vegetable and garlic soup. Not very rock and roll, but I’m pleased with my efforts!’

‘I’ve learnt that the contestants on Deal or No Deal should always deal on the second Banker’s offer. Nine times out of ten the money goes down after that’

‘A love of dark chocolate ginger biscuits dunked in tea. One word: Mmmm’ (Technically that’s not a word; it’s a letter. Ed)

‘A taste for cider. Organic, pear, apple . . . more varieties than wine now! And the headaches aren’t as bad the next day’

‘This year I’m definitely feeling older. Whether it’s the credit crunch or Strictly Come Dancing fever, suddenly I’ve learnt that there’s nothing more appealing than a Saturday night IN! Long gone are the days of having a few drinks at home before heading out at ten p.m. to go dancing. Ten p.m. . . . These days I’m lucky if I make it through to The X Factor results show without a pasta- and Pinot-induced power nap. I wish I could say that my bank balance was looking healthier for it, but all those calls for Tom Chambers and JLS cost precious pounds!’

‘This year I’ve learnt the skill of pre-empting a hangover. A tip I shall pass on. When going to bed after your night out ensure you have a glass of water to hand and stick in an Alka Selzer. When you wake in the night with “the thirst”, drink it down and, voila! In the morning no headachey, hangover symptoms’

‘I’ve finally learnt to stop drinking wine because it affects me too quickly; at the same time learning that gin is a wonderful substitute; I’ve learnt that I don’t need cigarettes; I’ve learnt that cleaning the house while listening to good music makes the experience far less painful; finally I’ve learnt that there are other Thai dishes which are (almost) as delicious as green chicken curry’

Is it me or is the theme eating and drinking and eating some more? I wish I could learn to let go when it comes to deal or no Deal -- I can't stop myself shouting at the screen. Deal, you silly people, deal!
