We wish you a hideous orgy of wanton violence

Christopher Brookmyre answers our Christmas questions

What is your favourite Christmas memory?

When I was two and a bit years old, my parents were living in a tenement in Barrhead, and I remember myself and Una, the little girl across the landing, runnning back and forth between our flats, taking decorations off each other's trees and transferring them. Right into adulthood, I always loved the fact that we kept the same tree ornaments, which reminded me of so many different Christmases, and I suppose some of them must have ended up in our possession due to my and Una's little exchange project.

What is the worst present you’ve ever given or received?

I asked my gran to knit me a jumper for playing golf when I was about twelve, and she presented me with the single most blindingly red item I have ever seen, before or since. If I had worn it outdoors in an open space I might have diverted aircraft.

What are your plans for this Christmas?

I am in the satisfying position of having delivered a novel, so I am intending to do as much nothing as possible. My son, however, may have other ideas. I imagine a hideous orgy of wanton violence will feature at some point, though only on the Wii.

Are you giving any books this Christmas?

With the exception of gifts to kiddies, I will be giving exclusively books this Christmas, but I haven't bouht any yet. I'm looking forward to some sustained browsing.

What book would you most like to receive this Christmas?

I'm very, very happy that I am already in possession of a completed manuscript of my own next one.

Any tips for surviving the festive period?

Yes. Stay away from miserable bastards who moan about it.

Glad to see you're a fan of Christmas. I never understand those "Bah Humbug" types. It's Christmas, for Chrissakes. Have some fun and let your hair down.

Also glad to see you're handing out books - may I recommend you peruse Douglas Coupland's latest, The Gum Thief, during your sustained browsing session?

    Cheers,

    Si
