Lashings and lashings of vodka

Paul Burston on how to get through the Christmas holidays

1. What is your favourite Christmas memory?

Receiving an Evel Knievel action figure when I was 7. He was sat on his bike, and you could wind it up and make it perform stunts, jumping over twelve buses or my sister's dolls.

2. What is the worst present you’ve ever given or received?

The worst present I ever received was talcum powder from my not-very-doting grandmother. Every year for about 12 years. She's dead now and I know they say you shouldn't speak ill of the dead, but she wasn't a very nice woman. The worst present I ever gave was a macrame plant holder to my mum. She said it looked like a skull.

3. What are your plans for this Christmas?

The husband and I are spending Christmas with my family in Wales.

4. Are you giving any books as gifts this Christmas?

I am. Someone will be receiving a copy of 'Skin Lane' by Neil Bartlett, and someone else will be getting 'Never The Bride' by Paul Magrs.

5.  Any book you'd like to receive this Christmas?

I'm keen to re-read Thomas Hardy, particularly 'Tess of the d'Urbervilles'.

6. Any tips for surviving the festive period?

Vodka. Lots of it.
