The best new year's resolution I ever made was more of a present to myself: the gift of time to write. A few years back, I took a look at my annual schedule of interviews, speaking engagements and book tours and thought of how all those things -- which are important as well -- kept edging into writing time. I decided to block out the first three months of every year for writing and only writing.
So after I pack away all the holiday decorations on January 1, I start to write and continue on until sometime in April. That block of time balances me for the rest of the year when the other demands of the business of publishing can't be put off.
One product of last year's writing time is Strangers In Death. As winter starts to fade in to New York in 2060, Eve comes up against murder that's wrapped in scandal and public speculation, and comes along with facts that don't add up. There were no signs of struggle by the victim, no sign of security breach at his home, and his nearest and dearest all have airtight alibis. It's up to Eve to take the facts, realign them and piece together the puzzle.
This year, I'm spending my writing-only time starting a quartet of books about the women who own and run a wedding business. It was actually the preparation for my son's wedding this June that got the idea rolling. So while you won't see the start of the series until May 2009, right now I'm elbows deep in tulle and flowers both in reality and in my imagination.
But you'll have plenty to keep you busy until then, I made sure of that early last year.
