All We Want For Christmas

Atom's Top Teen Reads for 2012

With Christmas just around the corner have you been wondering which brilliant books you might have missed? Fear not. Atom has Christmas 2012 all wrapped up – just take this wishlist to Santa and you’re pretty much sorted!

Gorgeous gift hardbacks

There’s something about a beautiful hardback book that’s impossible to resist. Especially when the content between the covers is even better. This year we’re totally torn between the gorgeously glamorous, seriously scary and super-cool 1920s-set The Diviners and House of Night Book 10: Hidden. Both are such brilliant reads we can’t come down between the two but aunts and uncles are always looking for present suggestions so why not slip both beneath their noses.

Escape to another world

Want to completely get away from it all this Christmas? Escape the earth’s atmosphere if you dare with Johan Harstad’s chilling 172 Hours on the Moon, enter a dystopian world in CJ Redwine’s Defiance or fall in love with the adventures of Perry and Aria in Under the Never Sky. And if you’ve not yet laid eyes on Heaven by Alexandra Adornetto, we defy you not to fall head over heels for the cover and unforgettable love story within.

Perfect paranormal

Paranormal is perennially popular for a reason: it’s just so darn good. If you’ve not yet read Rift, a prequel to Andrea Cremer’s Nightshade series, you’re in for a treat while Wolf Pact from Blue Bloods author Melissa de la Cruz is the start of an awesome new werewolf series.

Best of British

Last but not least are two titles that bring you the cream of the British YA crop in the form of Queen of Teen Sarra Manning and the amazing CJ Daugherty. Sarra’s laugh-out-loud funny, twenty-first century-set Adorkable is a right of passage for any teenage girl and Night School is just about the best book we’ve read since . . . well, we can’t remember when. Plus book two is out in January, so you can satisfy the Night School withdrawal symptoms you’re guaranteed to suffer pretty much straight away!

The Diviners

By Libba Bray
The queen of historical fiction takes on 1920s Jazz Age New York - with a supernatural twistIt's 1920s New York City. It's flappers and Follies, jazz and gin. It's after the war but before the depression. And for certain group of bright young things it's the opportunity to party like never before.

For Evie O'Neill, it's escape. She's never fit in in small town Ohio and when she causes yet another scandal, she's shipped off to stay with an uncle in the big city. But far from being exile, this is exactly what she's always wanted: the chance to show how thoroughly modern and incredibly daring she can be.

But New York City isn't about just jazz babies and follies girls. It has a darker side. Young women are being murdered across the city. And these aren't crimes of passion. They're gruesome. They're planned. They bear a strange resemblance to an obscure group of tarot cards. And the New York City police can't solve them alone.

Evie wasn't just escaping the stifling life of Ohio, she was running from the knowledge of what she could do. She has a secret. A mysterious power that could help catch the killer - if he doesn't catch her first.1920s New York thrums with giddy life in this gripping first in a new trilogy from Printz winner Bray. . .the intricate plot and magnificently imagined details of character, dialogue and setting take hold and don't let go. Not to be missed. Here's your headline, boss: "Small-Town Dame Lands in Big Apple, Goes Wild, Tries to Stop Resurrection of Antichrist." It'll sell bundles! Indeed it will, as Bray continues her winning streak with this heedlessly sprawling series starter set in Prohibition-era New York. . .The book is big and wants to be the kind of thing you can lose yourself in. Hidden

By Kristin Cast, P. C. Cast
The series has sold over a million copies in the UK already, but the next chapter of the House of Night story is set to be the biggest yet. With action, intrigue, and spicy romance, Zoey is back fighting the forces of darkness - after all, that's what being a bad-ass vampyre High Priestess is all about...I'd known it before we saw the fire trucks and the smoke. I'd known all hell had broken loose at the House of Night the moment it had been proven beyond all doubt that Neferet was on the side of Darkness. Only now I had a terrible feeling that outing Neferet would serve more to free her than to force her to pay the consequences for her lies and betrayals.

At last, Zoey has what she wanted: the truth is out. Neferet's evil has been exposed, and the High Council is no longer on her side - but she's far from done wreaking havoc in the vampyre world.

With the seeds of distrust sown and Darkness breeding chaos at the House of Night, everyone must band together - but that's proving to be more difficult than ever before. The twins are barely speaking and the House of Night's former enemy, Kalona, has now become their warrior, pushing their trust to the limits. To top it all off, Zoey is pretty darn sure she might be losing her mind - she saw something when she looked at Neferet's minion, Aurox, through the Seer Stone that she can hardly explain to herself, let alone her friends. Zoey knows that following her instincts might be just what they need to defeat evil... but if she's wrong, it could cause the destruction of those closest to her.

With the tension at a breaking point and friendships on the line, can the nerd herd come together to stop the spread of Darkness before it's too late?P. C. Cast is an award-winning fantasy and paranormal romance author. She was a teacher for many years but now concentrates on writing and public speaking full-time. Her daughter, Kristin Cast, has won awards for her poetry and journalism as well as co-writing the bestselling House of Night series. In the UK, the House of Night Series has sold over a million copiesThe House of Night series has built a fanbase of passionate fans in the US and UK and is now an international phenomenonNew House of Night novels are always destined to feature in the Sunday Times and New York Times bestseller chartsDramatic new cover look will revitalise the series and target a brand new legion of fansAges 14+

172 Hours on the Moon

By Johan Harstad
A chilling, edge-of-your seat thriller. Alien meets MoonThree teenagers are going on the trip of a lifetime. Only one is coming back.

It's been more than forty years since NASA sent the first men to the moon, and to grab some much-needed funding and attention, they decide to launch an historic international lottery in which three lucky teenagers can win a week-long trip to moon base DARLAH 2-a place that no one but top government officials even knew existed until now. The three winners, Antoine, Midori, and Mia, come from all over the world.

But just before the scheduled launch, the teenagers each experience strange, inexplicable events. Little do they know that there was a reason NASA never sent anyone back there until now-a sinister reason. But the countdown has already begun. . .A chilling, shivers-down-the-spine thriller...a high-quality piece of meticulously researched and realistic sci-fi/horror. This near-future tale falls within the blurry walls of young adult fiction but there's nothing to deter older readers. There are no punches pulled when it comes to offing major characters all the way through, and the final twist is satisfyingly merciless.Gripping and suspenseful, 172 Hours will have readers constantly asking themselves how the characters can possibly survive.

Original, creepy, intense, and quite violent, 172 Hours is page-turning sci-fi that will stay with readers long after the shocking and heartbreaking conclusion. This irresistible premise is often intoxicating and occasionally downright terrifying... Ultimately, this downbeat novel offers few answers, just the cold, unfathomable depths of space - and that alone is pretty darn effective.Creepy and bleak, Harstad's story is both psychologically and atmospherically disturbing.A nifty surprise ending will get readers' attention. Interesting and original.Johan Harstad is a Norwegian young adult author. He won the 2008 prestigious Brage prize in the children's literature category for 172 Hours on the Moon.172 Hours is set to be the most talked about YA debut of 2012172 Hours on the Moon has won the prestigious Brage prize for children's literature in NorwayJohan Harstad is a fantastic author - and primed to do for YA what Stieg Larsson did for crimeStrap yourself in for this chilling adventure...you'll want to keep your lights on long after you've read the last pageFor ages 12+
